Loneliness.
What a curious, deceptively simple word to describe the first descent to madness.
A feeling of sadness due to lack of company or friends, complete isolation. But from what? Isolation from other people that share the same bodily features such as legs, which walked upon the same planet, same soil as you? Perhaps the person’s vocal chords which speak in language familiar or strange to us, shaping words that can stir discomfort or soothe our hearts.
Or is it the isolation from the thought itself?
Do you remember how your parents took care of you, a fragile being just brought to the world. How they would dance around you, letting their parental instincts guide them as they fed you, cleaned you and sang you songs that would put you to sleep? It is not a memory that would remain for many of us, but a feeling of loneliness always crept in when we were left alone for a long time, when we could not see the pair of eyes that took care of us, and their hands that picked us up and embraced us with parental love. In an instant, we knew that we were never truly alone.
Do you remember your childhood? For some, it was the fondest time of their lives, filled with joy as they played with their parents, or siblings, or new friends that they made when playing outside, making us feel accepted. In the dark of the night, a plushy toy that would scare away the creeping darkness and monsters under our bed making us feel safe, or reading a fantastical book, satisfying our need for curiosity as we created worlds and stories in our minds, playing heroes and villains. No matter where we went, there was always something accompanying us, be it person or thought, and once more, loneliness found no place in our hearts.
Do you remember your days as a teenager? Each day was special, exploring new changes that occurred within you and around you. Your body changing rapidly, feelings within you burning with passion and anxiety as our mind was not yet able to understand what was truly happening. Suddenly having crushes, obsessing over their bodily features or words that echoed in our minds day and night, making us unable to fall asleep. No matter how and where we turned, our mind was always filled with thoughts that tugged at our brain, trying to put all the attention to itself. It was impossible to find a moment’s peace, and as such loneliness once more felt impossible.
Even now, surrounded by an incredible amount of tools and media where we could be connected as never before in our history, it seems that loneliness isn’t possible.
Loneliness… such a curious, deceptively simple word…
Tears flow from your eyes as you look around, seeing nothing but thorns and dead trees, surrounded by darkness that creeps on your body like a lunatic’s shirt, restraining you and clutching its grasp over you further.
Tell me, those kids that you have met in the park on that sunny day. Were they truly your friends? Or did they just allow you to play with them because there weren’t enough of them to play a certain game?
Those smiles from your parents in public, saying how much they loved you and smiled at you, were they sincere?
Those words from your school friends, did they really mean what they said? Or were they just using you to make themselves feel better?
And so the seeds of doubt are planted into your soul, growing into thorns that now shackle your heart. Darkness falls over your eyes as you close them, remembering all those details that now seem so clear on a black canvas.
All your life, you were alone. No one understood your thoughts, your actions, your pain and suffering. When you extended your arms in hopes of feeling an understanding embrace, all you were left with was painful emptiness. Tears that carved their path on your skin, waiting to be wiped, burned their trail deeper instead. Sobs and screams that were waiting to be answered remained ignored, wallowing in their own pain. All those familiar faces that you have come to know over the years vanish in your mind’s eye, leaving behind a distorted, foggy mass of color and shape.
You wrap your hands around your chest in an attempt to control your anxious cries, tears flowing down your cheeks as they form a river of pain and sorrow. Your body lays broken and dormant on the bed of thorns, piercing deeper as deep down you hope that one of them will strike deep enough where you would bleed out. Cries that echo through the dark and dead forest continue to be ignored as they lose themselves in its devilish depth.
Alone. You are truly, truly alone.
You do not matter.
No one cares about you.
No one loves you.
…
Why do you want to live if you are alone?
There is nothing left to live for.
…
Loneliness… such a deep, devilish and vile word…
…
…
And yet…
You open your eyes, drained and tired, ready to do the unthinkable, only for a faint glimmer of light to catch your attention.
You pick up your broken body, blood and tears dripping with your every step. Why do you fight? Why do you walk towards this insignificant speck of light? Why do you torment your body with every step? Wouldn’t it be nice to just succumb, and fall into a deep slumber, free of all pain and torment?
And then… you remember.
You remember why you are walking.
A single, beautiful word soothes your tormented mind, and unbinds your thorny shackles which grasped at your feet. Veil of darkness felt lighter with every step as the light grew bigger, urging you to break into a run.
Hope.
You step into serene clearing, filled with beautiful greenery and lavish colors from flowers of different shapes and sizes. Birds nesting and singing in a choir from beautiful trees, filled with green leaves that joined in the song as the wind gently brushed against them. Warmth of the sun showering your scarred body in its warm embrace as you look around yourself, taking in the serene environment.
The experiences of the thorny forest will forever stick with you. Forever, they will be a part of your life and its scars being a gruesome reminder of that lonely cage. But it is never too late to leave that cage, and step into the light.
It is never too late join the choir that sings the song of beauty.
It is never too late to hope for the better future.
It is never too late to hope.
…
You are not alone. You do not need to be alone. There is always hope, and people that cherish you.
You matter.
You are loved.
Never forget that.
