Blind but Still Sees You

I painted this for my partner as a Christmas present. She has gone blind but she still has light and color perception with some detail through a tiny pinhole's worth of vision in one eye. The diagnosis is Stargardt's (we thought it was RP but turns out, it's likely not). She was able to see most of the colors (there is some minor blue spectrum colorblindness, sadly) and some detail with her illuminated magnifying glass.

I'm going to take a moment here just to inform anyone who may not know: Blindness is a spectrum. If someone is blind, it doesn't necessarily mean "total blank screen." Sure, it can mean that, but most blind people still have some degree of light, shadow, color, and/or movement. Some blind people can navigate environments relatively well as long as there's enough light. Some blind people may need mobility canes or seeing eyedogs but not all do.
Also, please, for the love of every possibly existing god, do not tell a blind person "well, you don't look blind." There is no way to "look blind". That milky white eyes thing is specifically cataracts which not all blind people have. The spooky white eyes + no iris/pupils thing is specifically Hollywood. I don't think that's a thing IRL or if it is, it's extremely rare.
And for Pete's sake, educate your dang kids, will ya? If you can't be bothered to do that, don't get all pissy when a disabled person explains the situation to your brats who just blurted out something rude because you didn't teach them any better. This happens WAY too often. We've even had children try to mess with my partner's mobility cane! More than once! And both times, the !@#$%^&*ing parents got mad at HER! WTF, people? Come on.

Tell your partner she's beautiful and so is this portrait is absolutely stunning.
I agree with the final statement... education on that is a big deal.
Blindness as a spectrum is really fascinating and even I had been ignorant to the idea of blindness being cataracts = blindness which isn't true at all, I'm glad there's youtuber's out there with a wide range of different conditions to cause blindness that it's helped me a lot.

Wow, this has to be one of my favorite pieces from you! The colors are absolutely stunning! I'm so glad your partner was able to see most of it!
Are you ever going to sell prints of this? I'd love to see it on my wall 💙 but since it's FOR your partner, I totally understand if you don't want other people hanging it up c:

I'll ask her but I doubt she'd mind. I think she'd probably be flattered if anything.
Awesome, thank you!
Lemme know when you get the chance, please!

This is absolutely gorgeous.
As to the harassment, I mean, what can I say but to agree: WTF.

The iridescence is... scrumptious? I get a warm feeling from this one.
I can sympathize, to some degree, with the kid problems. I've developed mobility issues the past few years. i know parents refuse to educate their children on so many things and they'll sue the schools if they try it. When the kids misbehave the Karen in question whines, "Let a kid be a kid." If my parents had done that I'd probably be in prison right now.

Many thanks and I'm sorry you have to deal with that shit. It can be really obnoxious at times. Just the other day, some kid blurted a rude question at my partner. It was clear that he didn't know any better. His mother yelled at him for being rude. When my partner tried to explain the situation the mother yelled at her; "Don't talk to my kid!" Well, someone needs to because you clearly haven't, ya dumb bitch! That's what I felt like saying but I didn't. I behaved. :P
I just like how the picture looks. Though the story.,.. yeah, it's pretty messed up that some kids are messing with your partner's mobility cane and the parents of said kids are mad at your partner for it... feels messed up.
Yeah. There was one kid who decided it was a toy and his mother actually demanded that JD let him play with it. Like, WTF lady? Then there was another kid who grabbed it and it pinched his finger because it's one of those fold up canes. Kid started wailing and the father started yelling at my partner for this! Like... fucken... Jesusfucksdlfkksdjfkjdsn.
I'm sorry to hear that happened - I remember your previous struggles and journal entries. But... I'm really glad you're still with her, and that she's able to see *anything*. And yeah, f* trophies are horrendously ill-mannered these days. Parents need to step up and do better.
stunning work
the colors are so beautiful ... the colors of a loving heart :D

This piece it gorgeous! I'm glad that your partner got to experience as much as they could!
As someone who lost their vision last year this peace almost made me cry. It *IS* a spectrum!
Blindness doesn't immediately equal blank screen or darkness....and I've had so many people tell me "well you don't look blind" or "you dont have a seeing eye dog so how can you be blind?" and I'm sitting here trying to explain to them what it's actually like only for them to look at me as if I had a third head.
People certainly do need to educate people that disability isn't always visible or immediately discernible. And to have more compassion towards people.

Amen. This. So much this. It's so sad watching my wife have to constantly justify her diagnoses to people who don't understand that not all disabilities are obvious. I've suggested to her that we start carrying around business cards with basic info about blindness and I want to print her up a T-shirt that says "playing life on hard mode" with a list of all her diagnoses.
In any case, I'm sorry you have to deal with that. :\

This is positively stunning! I'd love to see this done with iridescent paints or inks. Amazing artwork, Silver!
As a bad eyesight person myself (just heavy myopia, so I can't work or walk properly without glasses, it's very uncomfortable to the degree when it's sometimes not possible), I can imagine how annoying and rude some kids may be >~< (getting not really comfortable questions about eyesight and glasses sometimes, luckily, nothing worse so far) I am very sorry to hear you meet such. For me, it's not about their knowledge, but more the behaviour in general. Some are just rude. Some where teached how to ask gently and carefully. I mean, they discover world around them, and parents could not have time yet to tell about some illnesses. But some are just.. Rude. Kids can be really cruel if nobody teaches them what's good or not.
About the piece.. I absolutely love it! I love the painterly and soft look, the bright colors. I am really liking more free and painterly styles hehe :3 and the idea behind the piece is very strong. Also, cool detail, that white fur mutation in tigers made many of them had troubles with eyesight. As well as some breeds of white fur dogs, when recessive genetics mix. That brings some extra level of depth, the animal and design you picked up here ;^;
Totally one of my favorite pieces, at least portraits, from you. I also wish you to spend nice holidays despite everything :3

Aye. Agreed 100%
And thanks. :D You're very kind. Ever since I've gotten into Rebelle, I feel like my style has loosened up a lot. I'm actually having a much easier time painting and drawing because I don't feel like I'm fighting the brushes.

THe colors are so gorgeous. and the piece is so full of light. Wonderful.
Believe it or not, I have your advice to thank for that. Long while ago, you mentioned something about crisper light. It took me a while to process what you meant but I think I got there in my own time. So thank you doubly. :3
Beautiful pic :)
And sad to hear about idiots who don't get it :(
As someone who's spoken with her (albeit over Discord), I think she's a really beautiful person. Pass on a HUGE hug from me. :) <3

Wowowow! Omigosh I legit cried when I saw this and it took me all day to find the words here. That she still got to see, touches my heart! The feels! Oh, the feels...I haven't been so moved by art in a long time and your message here added incalculable layers of beauty beyond the gorgeous cat. I concur about prints, I'd frame and hang this in a heartbeat.
Beautiful piece, this.
And I'm guilty of the occasional forgetting of my friend's colorblindness because of how well he gets along with it and has a pretty good track record of calling out colors anyway when we're gaming. Hiccups most often come when the color he thinks he's dealing with for call-outs exists elsewhere, at least nowadays.

This is so incredibly beautiful !
Thank you for sharing about your partner as well.

This illustration is so beautiful. I am so sorry to hear about your partners loss of vision, and apologies they need to deal with rude people. People (kids too) can be truly insensitive. Much hugs to you both, and keep up this marvelous work. (if you sell prints of this anyplace please let me know)
This piece is stunning and the emotion and love put into the piece really shows!
I absolutly love the rendering and the harmony of colours between the markings and the flowers!!!
Absolutely gorgeous!
I could feel that there was something deeper to this even before reading what you wrote here.
I grew up with a sensitivity to disabilities. My mom had polio as a kid, and as she grew older she developed post polio syndrome. She always had mobility issues due to muscle wasting in her legs and arms, but her disability wasn't apparent just by looking at her. It's remarkable how many people have no clue or sensitivity to things like that, or were rude to her or endangered her by their ignorance and/or insensitivity.
