Two hundred and thirty-eight thousand miles
and cruising along in the distance lone-wolf-style
our single moon shines and often inspires.
Far from the sun, it has no fire.
It has no heat of notable measure.
We rely on old Sol for our tanning pleasure.
Yet occasionally during our lunar friend's orbital trips
it performs an event known as an eclipse.
Swinging around its body and blocking out the sun
it makes things dark for almost everyone.
The birds get confused and then they get chattery.
Then they go quiet like they've worn out their batteries.
For thousands of years, we've recorded these wonders.
It's hard to ignore something you're right under.
Predictions are made and some end up fearing
the loss of light as they cower in clearings.
Still, with our science, we've learned much better.
Eclipses are wondrous, deserving poetic letters.
So if you see one be happy for the Man in the Moon
is just getting a tan and will be back soon.

I'm glad I let my best friend convince me to go outside and watch. I only saw a brief moment of totality but at least we got to watch it together. The thumbnail was taken by his roommate.

what I wonder is - during an eclipse, does the far side of the moon light up?

"Both sides get lit and go into darkness alternately just like earth does. Correct way to differentiate two sides is the one “facing” the earth and the one “not facing” the earth. During solar eclipse, the “earth facing” side of the moon is in dark and the other side is lit. Coming to your question, the answer is yes."

"Turn around, bright eyes..." :P
But seriously, I was fortunate enough to see it in Niagara (called in a very large favour from a friend, who works at Malivoire Winery, and was able to sit out in the vineyards). The last total eclipse I saw was in 1979, when I was in Second Grade, and realising that I likely won't be alive by the time the next one comes around... Yeah, there was NO WAY I was going to miss this one, if I could help it.

The only other eclipse I can remember is the total lunar eclipse that happened on July 6th, 1982...four days after The Secret Of NIMH premiered. I remember it because I wanted to go see NIMH again instead of watching the sky lol. I'm glad my aunt made me skip the movie, even thought I barely remember it.
I saw that one too. Standing on the dock at the family summer cottage. Those were the days...
I try not to think about how my grandparents eventually sold the place to my two cousins, and the moment the deed was in their hot little hands, I was very pointedly told that I was no longer allowed on the property. :(
