An experiment! Unfortunately my old shield broke;

It was bound to happen eventually so I'm not too worried about it and learned a lot while working on it. But I leant it to another fighter and unfortunately they fell onto the shield. Breaking the wooden backing of the shield. Its still holding together due to all the foam holding it but its no longer safe. I'll try to get a picture of it before I put it on the wall or something as it took quite a beating for sure as a shield should! It was looking pretty Skaven-y!
But a big issue with that shield is it was an arm strap shield. Which is really good to keep it on my arm and make sure I dont lose it in a fight but it much less maneuverable than it could be. When it broke I tried out some other shields that were center grip only and found them much more helpful in the often frantic and much quicker fights we have in Amtgard. As its much more maneuverable just held in my hand not attached to my arm so I can move it around more and hold it further away from my body. Making it 'larger' to the opponent. So I decided to try and make one of my own as my next shield!
I actually made/am making two center grips. This is actually the second one but it was much easier to make progress on this so here is what you are seeing now. I am still making another bigger triangle shield, as I had some more wooden blanks to use, but this was my go at making a full foam shield. Hopefully less chance of wooden breaking and all that if its got no wood in it. In addition to this desire I was told of some pretty good foam that Harbor Freight sold. This specifically;

How good, thought I, ten bucks for four sheets of good looking foam! All the same size! Perfect! When I first bought them I thought that I could use two sheets to make a shield. But while marking out the circles my dad, being an Engineer, looked at the measurements and pointed out that if I made the circle smaller all the parts could come out of one sheet. A legal shield out of one sheet? Four of them for ten bucks?! It was this idea that made me focus on this one rather than finishing the new triangle. A project for later.
But here you can see the process of that. The goal being to use that sheet, with its toothy perimeter pieces as well, to make one shield. Unfortunately fallen at the first hurdle as the two layers would not be thick enough to satisfy the thickness requirements. But still. One extra circle of blue camp on the front, that I already know from my first triangle shield is very good to paint, easy to add and would make the entire think a smidge over an inch and a half. Over the minimum thickness! So off we went.
Starting on the main sheet with the big circle that would be the 'top'. In the middle of the top would be a rectangle cut out that the handle would come out from for holding. Hopefully to make the handle stronger to have a solid piece holding it down. The two middle half circles came next. As you can see not big enough to meet up. But this was on purpose so the handle can slide between them to be nice and snug inside while making the shield as strong as possible. The handle itself is two of those external parts of the foam mat. The tooth parts that lock into the foams teeth to make it a smooth square. Doubled up to make a wider handle as just one felt too thin and I would have thought too flimsy.
Thats the hope at least. Onto the next picture!
