My Inspiration
Last winter I went whale watching and we came across a pod of killer whales. The sense of wonder I felt stayed with me, and when I was assigned swimming werewolves, I knew I wanted to show the connection and kinship between the wolves of the land and wolves of the sea. My first sketches showed a split of above and below view with some woofers swimming with orca fins cutting the surface of the water, among other things.

But then as I was looking for reference I kept seeing so many incredible shots of dogs underwater, and I was inspired to sketch this guy.
This fellow is out for a swim when an orca comes up and interacts with him. The werewolf reaches out to gently touch the orca as it swims by.
Created in Corel Painter X. My first serious try at total internal reflections and caustic light on fur...and floating fur as well. A lot of work went into this, from sculpting mock ups and using a mirror to figure out the reflection, to spending hours in the pool acting this out and staring at my hands under the shifting waves. I suppose the pool part wasn't so bad. ;3 I learned a lot, and would love to do better next time.
My Caption:
"Werewolves are capable swimmers in the wild, their powerful arm and leg muscles providing easy thrust in water. Swimming is both carried out as a recreational activity and out of necessity. Young werewolves are drawn to pools of water and enjoy long hours of leisurely frolic under parental supervision. Young adults and occasionally older adults will be seen joining in the play sessions. Beyond serving as a moral boost and social bonding exercise, swimming also aids in removing land-born parasites from the thick coats of werewolves, cooling in hot summer months and valuable skill training for young werewolves. During play sessions, young werewolves may practice fishing skills or endurance swimming. During floods or times of scarce food, werewolves may be required to traverse wide expanses of water to reach fresh territory. Hence these jovial play sessions serve as important life lessons as well."

that water, and it's reflections, and refractions are amazingly well done. Did it take a lot of attempts to get it right?
They say a picture tells a thousand words, this one tells a million and nine.
Truly one of my greatest favorites of all time.

That looks amazinnnnng! Aiya great job. They look very playful c: The water looks so crazy good.
Oh man, swimming with whales is one of the few thing I want to do before I die.
by the gods... i could swear this was a photography! the effect is so beautiful! for those of us who love the sea this is like a visual hymn
Breathtaking O.O Which would be a bad thing for the werewolf, being underwater and such XD
Your talent never ceases to amaze me I will definitely try to get my hands on the calender this year!
I figured that was what inspired this pic when I first saw your wips of it ;)
O.O wow its just wonderful beautiful I love that water effect
Very nice water refraction effect. reminds me of being out snorkeling in the Puget Sound, though I have never been able to get close to Orcas like that. Now that would be cool.
Very nice job

Oh my goodness this is incredible. I honestly took a double take, i thought it was a photo at first! Insta-Fav!
Oh and, hi! I'm the annoying Brit who was with you and Keet. :P Hope things are well!

damn i thought my computer screen was wet for a second that water looks so real o.o
Beautiful, I'm really glad you were chosen as one of the artist <3 As usual your art is incredible and you do draw water better than anyone I know. Well after all, you're a fishwolf, you know your element well.
I will be buying tha calendar again this year, like the past 2 years. Having pictures similar to prints of very high quality drawings of very good artists for such a low price is something I wouldn't miss!!! I will preorder it on september first as soon as the preorder opens.
The total internal reflection effect is really well done too! I love this!

Oh wow, very nice! This is the first time I've seen an anthro character swimming
Allow me to add another to your massive list of 'holy crap, that water looks amazing!!!'
This is incredible. Absolutely stunning, I am blown away by the realism you achieved in this piece! Painting things underwater is so hard and you nailed it perfectly! I wish I could fave this a thousand times!
Just. Wow.
Every image that I've seen for the 2012 calendar floors me; even being an unemployed student, I so badly want to order a copy!
The amount of work you must have put into this...I can barely imagine. This is unprecedented in "furry" artwork as far as I have seen, and I barely would classify it as furry..just fantasy, really. The reflection of the werewolf in the inner surface of the water is very believable, and the perspective of the wolf himself looks great!
Nearly any one of your thumbnails would have made for lovely pieces too, but this final is a very nice choice, and most splendidly executed!
I adore that wide-eyed look of wonder and awe on the wolf's face, and the calm smirk of the orca...
Bravo :)

Its kinda sad though that we wont have a chance to use the 2012 calender cause 2012 is when the world will end
Beautiful water effects with the ripples and bubbles and lines of light. Hey, THIS should've been the cover of "Nevermind"!
the most incredible piece of art i have seen in a long time i think.
This is absolutely amazing, it almost looks like a picture! This is the best use of color I've ever seen for water
Extremely impressive work, Top Marks in my book

This is absolutely stunning. I absolutely love the effect you accomplished, not only with the reflection of the water, but the dancing of the shadows on the Orca's back. And the wolf's expression, you can see their will and determination to place their on whale's back. Wonderful job!
That water is just gorgeous! The expression in those eyes is awesome, and that fur! Love you work, as always!
A-mazing!! and breathtakingly beautiful....The realism is total.
OMGWTFWOW.
This picture, right here, just sold the calendar to me.
Absolutely amazing; as are you. *flatterybomb*

This is absolutely mind blowing! You have outdone yourself once again!!

Definitely going to be one of the best :3
Definitely going to be one of the best :3
wow this is amazing. Beautiful detail on the water and really like the water ripples on the orca. Amazing.
Two of my favorite critters in the same pic..somehow! :D Very awesome and love the water effect :)
Words cannot describe how absolutley stunning this image is! And that water reflection is epic in its own right!
The water effects look amazing! *clicks to fullsize it* I can't wait to see how it is fully- OH CRAP! WHERE'D ALL THAT WATER COME FROM!? Oh... it's just the pic. o.o Like I said, nice detail. ^^ *goes to put towels away*
Wow, I have always connected wolves and cetaceans to one another, especially orcas and wolves. they are one in the same, it is so cool to see this picture! amazing!
As someone who has been in the water with dolphins and Whales and seen a view like this I am in awe of what you have done here. How you have captured the moment leaves one breathless! }:=)
wowza. that's amazing. lovely water surface turbulence and lighting effects.
Wow so real looking! I love the details and especially the reflection of the wolf in the water!
This is quite easily the most realistic water effect I have ever seen drawn and colored. The fact that you got the light effects properly shining and shimmering across their bodies, as well as creating a realistic ceiling of water where the surface is, is truly a wonder to look at. Even the small bubbles that rise up from around his claws are breath taking to look at and the fluid flow of his fur within the water is superbly crafted.
This is a real piece of art.

This just made my jaw drop, and I've been trying to go over every stunning detail for the past 15 min. Vannie this is unbelievable! I applaud your venture into new situations and techniques. I want to say this shows that your artwork is improving, but you already have an indescribably well developed talent that I know this piece is more of an expansion of your abilities and of what you can already do very, very well.
Your use of light in this really makes the characters pop. It's as though you took all the talent from your other works and shined a literal light on a real subject. The light in this piece has brightened every usual detail and seems to have brought out other details that the visual mind doesn't pick up in your other pieces. I don't know how you did it, but the reflection and the water in general looks very believable. That must have been an incredible amount of analyzing and patience to get those effect as stunning as they are. I also love how you've taken care to push floating fur opposing the direction of travel. It's not just enough to show floating fur; some areas will lie flat on moving parts and others will suspend in a stop or change of currents. And I really shouldn't be surprised, but it's fantastic how you've basically captured the exact points of movement in a still picture. Not to mention the whimsical expressions. Your work, especially for the calendars, never ceases to correct my thinking that it cannot get any more impressive. Thank you very much for sharing this with us!

Very awesome work! The water effects are amazing! ^^
I am looking forward to seeing this on the calendar next year! I ordered my calendar very early this morning and seeing this image confirms my belief it was a great decision!
Epic. Well done. Although from first glance, it looked like a hunt. But i didnt know werewolves swam. Thats nifty. The realistic is just wow. I feel like Im in the water with em.

This is beautiful! You really got the pose, fur and lighting effects down. Fantastic work!
OMFG! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, I am going to have to pick one of these calendars up. Just amazing. And the water effect, wow. That must of taken forever to get right!
My first thought was that the werewolf was trying hunt the whale. Heheh. I don't think that would work very well.

I apologise to all the other artists on here but I really think this is the most stunning piece I've ever seen o.o It's amazing, almost like it's real <3! The ripples, the fur, the light, everything you said you worked hard on REALLY shows, just ... I'm gobsmacked x.x!
I remember correctly, based in the evolutionary chart. That Orcas were once wolves, they used to hunt nearby beaches and eventually adapted to become what they are now.
This is really amazing. The more I look at it, the more I see all the attention to detail you but into it and it astonishes me all over again.
What they said!
I was wondering, since the wolf is underwater, wouldn't his ears be flattened against his head?
I was wondering, since the wolf is underwater, wouldn't his ears be flattened against his head?
I did consider it. I decided to show them up and alert because that orca is just so cool, what's a bit of water in his ears?
Absolutely stunning! I could stare at this for hours.
Your technique is really creative, using mirrors and actual swimming to get it right. You've inspired me to try doing the same thing with my art. I'm sure using live references and experiences is incredibly helpful, rather than just photos. Thanks so much, and again, amazing job!

This is my favorite thing on this entire site. It's astounding how warm the water looks.
wow, somehow I missed this when you uploaded it and I just saw this in someone's faves. X3 I really love the water reflection effect above and all the light refractions, this came out amazing.
Now you need some kind of ... ... Airwolf.
Cue badasstheme.avi p.o

*_* This is amazing. I vant to drink the water it looks so ..brilliantly drawn. All the hard work you clearly put into this piece definately shows. ^^ I'm now watching you xD I don't know why I wasn't before.
I have always loved how in the pacific northwest native art and beliefs the orca whale image was said to be the wolf of the sea. it was always really fascinating to think of it that way and to know that they were thought of in that way by the people. it kind of makes sense! I'm not really particularly partial to whales but in the P.N. native art they are some of the most beautiful designs!
Holy crap that is awesome! And reminds me of Nirvana :3
That would be kick ass! Like instead of a human baby chasing a dollar, a werewolf cub chasing a fish. :)
I thought I had already fav'ed this before, but I guess not. I absolutely love this!!! I'm from Florida originally, so I just love underwater pictures! It's quite beautiful!
wow....

Wow, your detail with the water and the fur with the reflection of the water! Total kudos to you! <3
This is truly a masterpiece! The water effects are just outstanding!
Just love the underwater detail and basically the pic overall!
This is one of the most incredibly detailed and beautiful pieces I've seen since joining the fandom... it looks like it's straight out of a Christian Reese Lassen gallery.
I couldn't agree more with this and many of the other comments shown here. This is a fantastically detailed piece of art.
You did an excellent job pushing your skills beyond what your used to. It also speaks to my love of the water and the creatures that fascinate me living there, not to mention my love of anthropomorphic art in general. Definately a favorite, keep up the great work. I simply can't wait to see more.
I just found you and this gallery, but will be spending some time going through it... Thanks for sharing.

Wow, the amount of planning and research that you put into this is incredible. But it certainly paid off, it looks incredible. Feel like I'm right under there with them.
Oh! I'm so glad I found you! I got this print from you at Anthrocon, but realized afterward that I didn't get your name or FA account. It's just so incredibly beautiful! I love it!

Hello, I think you already know but ASDGFJSUZSKUG THIS WATER EFFECT LOOKS SO EPIC Hnnnggg !!!!!!!!!!!
I am in love with your work with water. This piece especially; the movement in the fur, bubbles, and glow and then you have a sleek whale but yet kept everything very natural looking.
I think this has been my favorite image in out of the calendar this year! From the lighting, reflections, flow, and just plain amazing quality~!
Will your work be featured in the 2013 calendar? =)
Will your work be featured in the 2013 calendar? =)
So glad you enjoy it!! And yes, I will have a piece in 2013.
My best friend showed me this awhile back and now that I'm on FA I had to fave it. Your work is stunningly beautiful.
This just WOW! I love the wonderment the werewolf has in it's eyes, and how the water looks. This picture has so much feeling in it. Simply stunning!
amazing job!
amazing job!
this is really good! it reminds me of nirvana's album cover for Nevermind alot
This piece is absolutely breathtaking. When I first saw it in the MFF art show I was instantly captivated and in a state of pure awe by not only the beauty of the piece as well as the detail, but the message behind it all. I'm a marine biology student and my ideal career would be to work with marine mammals, and guess what, I'm also a furry, so seeing the two combined so perfectly is... for a lack of better words, inspiring. This picture, this work of art, it's my dream.
(i mean touching wild cetaceans is illegal but you know what i mean)
Thanks so much for sharing this with us. It's really an honour to own a signed print of this beauty.

I'm so glad you enjoy it so much! It's certainly a meaningful piece to me as well. I had several people mention the legality of touching marine mammals at this past con, to which I wondered, does the law apply to wolves as well? *grin*
Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for your comment!
What does he think he's going to do with it after he catches it?
OWO Just...WOW. Your lighting work is absolutely breathtaking, and your use of reflections really brings this scene to life! I'm captivated by the concept of connecting wolves with the sea and the perspective of the hand reaching out to touch the orca below the surface is simple stunning. It's like I could be swimming alongside it!
What more could I say then all the other comments say? Truly amazing.
Very amazingly done. Love the details.
This reminds me of a dream I had. Me and my partner were swimming to this island in the ocean and it was sorta a nightmare for me because I have this phobia of the oceans of not knowing whats lurking deep below always thinking the worst could get me so all the time I was thinking massive sharks were going to snap me and my partner was telling me its okay don't worry the killer whales are here they will protect us from the monsters below and all the while the whales were swimming just beneath that I could reach out and touch it and feel its warmth and protection guiding me to the island and back.
This picture pretty much captures that to me and will remind me the goodness in that vast deep space of unknown. Thank you for sharing this.

I saw this as a print at TFF and it was a shame I didn't have the funds to buy it since this is one of my favorites of your works. I really hope to buy a large print of this next year at TFF2017.
I learned werewolves can never drown.
