Coeurls - the engineered race
incomprehensible ramble in 3...2...1...
Designed to be an integral part of society they come in many forms - from illegal slave labor, to the grizzly, disembodied biological components to supercomputing, to units of war. Some are more feral in function and appearance... some more human. Their resilience, malleability, innate ability to remotely interface with technology made their services exceedingly important as the years pass.
We don't know where the they came from or how and why we came to learn so much about manupulating every aspect of their being but it has been the focal point of our society for several decades. More curious yet is the fact that we lack the knowledge to do this with any other form of life. All of our advancements seem revolve around putting our knowledge of them to better use... but arguably more frightening than our sudden reliance on them is the matter that we still aren't sure whether or not they are truly sentient. The more humanlike coeurls seem to have a language and society of their own but where it originates from is a complete mystery. We aren't sure if their "society" is our design or theirs.
___________
Unlike their more feral counterparts, the shoulder appendages the type of Coeurl Azza and Mara share are more vestigial and serve little more than a status symbols - especially large or small, and/ or prehensile tentacles being more desirable than the more normal stationary form. Amongst themselves they are referred to as 'wings'.
Both Azza and Mara's have been bound within their armor for as long as I've drawn them with this feature, but where Mara sports the standard pair Azza on the other hand has a unique morphology in that she has several rows of longer, more winglike growths.

Hopefully this is an idea I can someday smoothen out and use.
One thing I need to do do is learn proper cat anatomy. I can figure most of it out but the arms and legs anger and confuse me.

It isn't a stray line. The entire sketch is in there. The problem is that I should have erased it since for the most part I painted over the original sketch.. except for in the tail. The tail itself was actually made in photoshop using certain brushes to create the base which I then flattened with the sketch before bringing it back to sai.
It's not a hard fix... so Ill go ahead and hide it now.

Eeeeee I dunno if you can stomach it but you might be interested in reading some of Allastair Reynolds' sci-fi novels. Some of them talk about bits like what it means to have a personality over several centuries of human history when life-extending treatments become more commonplace, and what it means to be moral over such a long period of time.. and other things too, like femtotech, which I guess is a word used to describe the same sort of mechanics nanotech use, but several orders smaller, able to manipulate the smallest observable building blocks of reality.
But yeaaaaah I like the ideas you wrote, and it looks quite dangerous and beautiful. ;3;

2-3 hours. I forget how long. I got hung up in the feet design and wonkyness of the neck and was close to scrapping it. In fact - I did. I took a break and did that Rudragon picture. I came back to it and finished it afterall.
The tail was no biggie though. I have two brushes that I alternated/ erased to produce the basic silhouette...and from there it only took about 5-10 minutes of actual work to get the full tail down.

*instantly faves at first glance*
Holy snap, Tsampikos... this pic took you only a few hours to draw in all those gorgeous details, including the smooth and shiny texturing and coloring of the tentacles (especially the brightly glowing neon-blue pod-like protrusions at the ends), the tail with its many segments/parts, and overall design of the armored plating around its body (including the glowing blue lighting effects from the open spaces between the plates as well as from the eyes, teeth and claws)? That is impressive, to say the least! :D
So, from what I've gathered (and please correct me if I'm wrong on this), your characters Azza and Mara are the more humanlike/anthro coeurls you mentioned in the pic description? I had a feeling that from what pics I've seen of them, they had a feline-like appearance about them, but wasn't sure what species they were exactly until now. Very neat to learn that bit of new info. about them. :)

When I saw this creature I thought, Why does this creature look so Familiar.
Ever play Baldur's Gate:Dark Alliance on the PS2?
Well there is this one part where you enter an ice cave in the game whre you meet these beasts. O.o
Apparently the Displacer Beast is based on the Coeurl.
XD So awesome..

This truly is a great piece. The attention to detail, shading, lighting and personal flairs all make this even more so. The only issue I have with this piece, if it could even be called that, is that I have an idea similar to this; A revolutionarily new breed of synthetic life forms, learning VI's that are paired with a coresponding organic organism in order to develop and becom true AI's in order to function as better workers, thinkers and soldiers. This is being posted here to serve as a public marker that I wanted to confirm that my idea is not a theft of yours. Thank you for your time

Your speed-paint make my brain hurt. YOU ARE TOO GOOOOOD. *cries*
Have you ever read "The Black Destroyer" by A. E. Van Vogt? (It's collected in a book of his stories called "The Voyage of The Space Beagle"- he had a thing for Darwin and exploratory journeys.) He's the fellow who originally created the coeurls in the 1930's (the original concept for the coeurls, was his, anyway- his beasties were massive, black panther-like things with the tentacles and they fed on life-energy. The protagonists of the story meet up with the last of the species and have to defend themselves against it.)
I know, late to the party- saw this awesome image in someone's favourites. It's gorgeous, by the way- love the intensity of the glow you put on it's tentacles. and the gleam of it all over the thing's metallic body. Sweetly done!
