Here's something I didn't realize I would be posting!
After Furfright in 2011, I was on a huge high from the experience, especially seeing people perform in the Masquerade - and even as the weekend's magic faded, the thought of doing something myself next year wouldn't leave me alone. And so this weekend, I was part of it, doing a standup act about how I was corrupted into the furry fandom.
About two minutes before I was pushed on to the stage, I realized that I could leave my phone recording in my pocket to capture the live experience. So even though I was the one that performed this, this is technically a bootleg :) The entire Masquerade was something remarkable - I'm really looking forward to the DVD when it comes out, and I'll update this submission with a link when it does.
So this is my act, which overran a bit at eight minutes in the end but nobody seemed to mind :) Also included are two snippets of chatter - one of me apologizing to the sound man at the start because I'm colourblind and can't tell when the microphone is switched on or off, and one of me stepping off the stage at the end and then falling over a bag.
I'd like to give my thanks to Wag and to kiffakitmouse, who each had a hand in convincing me that I could come up on stage and do this - as well as belicbear for being a fantastic master of ceremonies, and all the friends who I was going around with, and the rest of Drama Armada for their reassurance during the wait (I was on directly after the opening band!) The reaction was better than I had ever imagined, and I already know I'm going to write another one for next year!

Perfect! A good laugh is just what I need after a hard days slog! Should definitely do some more stand up, you're really good at it =]
Thank you, and I'm glad that it brightened you up :) I've... sort of dreamed of doing something like this for ages - I've tried to get a couple of humour columns into local newspapers before, but being on stage and experiencing the reaction and back-and-forth live is truly something special. It's something that I never thought I would have the confidence to do, but Furfright worked some kind of magic on me :)
This came out even better than the one in the rehearsal!! I'm so glad you recorded it for us to listen to. You won me over at the furry musician comment, because it's so true!!
Also, I think you should change the thumbnail to bunny PJs, just sayin!

It's actually really weird hearing myself speak so fluently in this recording - I don't feel like I'm very good at just speaking, stringing words together off the cuff. It helped that I'd been practicing this since the start of October and it had evolved a little every time I ran through it, so I was... sort of prepared for most of the things the live performance threw at me :) When you said "mother" in response to the "who caught you?" question in the rehearsal, I had a response prepared for that, but "sociology professor" was not one I'd anticipated!
We definitely have a hard time of it on FA ;) Thank you once again for your reassurance and saying how nice my accent was and everything just before I went on - you definitely gave me a boost right at the last minute! And I'm glad that I stayed around and saw your performance during the rehearsal as well - I'm looking forward to seeing how we all looked on the eventual DVD.
There weren't many people at the Dead Dog Party, but susi and darknessfalls convinced me to come out and dance in the bunny pyjamas. There were a lot of photographers around. I fear I may now be Furfright promotional material.

Hahaha Don't fear it, that would be amazing. My bf absolutely loved your act, but he had to leave right after ours since he had a horrid migraine. I told him about the bunny outfit after he woke up the next morning and he was sad that he missed it. You definitely made an impact, the laughter when you walked out was great!!
It was a... nerve-wracking moment, as I hadn't even told my friends that I had it with me :) It was a very... unusual reaction - I just remember walking across and hearing a noise of... bewilderment that erupted into laughter as they realized who I was :)
I'm so glad that I'm able to show people - it was an idea on a whim two minutes before I went on, and it worked out very well in the end!
Congrats on the first stand up routine that ever used the word stratum!
Kjorteo noticed that as well - this is groundbreaking in many ways ;) We had been playing that the night before and it was sort of in my head at the time!
I am so very, very sad that I missed this event! You did an OUTSTANDING job!
Thank you so much - I still can't quite believe I did it! Perhaps next year - I'm definitely going back up there!
That was great! I'm glad I got to hear the performance so soon after. Glad to hear you're doing it again next year!
It sounds like we both brought the house down in our own individual ways :) I'm looking forward to seeing your performance on the DVD and your own submission of the new songs, as well!
It really is, I used to do it when I was much younger when I was in a ceilidh group and with sketches with the church youth group, but it had been ages... I really enjoyed the reactions and playing back and forth with them, though. It sort of helps that, as I say at the start, you really can only see the huge stage lights and a black hole in front of you, with maybe just the front row of the audience if you shield your eyes!
Thank you so much - for your energy, your enthusiasm, and for doing your part to ruin my reputation ;) I didn't even mention in the description that... you were the one who encouraged me to Furfright 2011 in the first place - this is because of you!
You did amazingly, I'm really sorry I couldn't be there to hear it in person...
A late reply - thanks so much :) It was great to see you there again - the convention's atmosphere definitely worked some sort of magic on me since my nervous first appearance just last year...!
I had to play it back to myself so much, not out of (too much) vanity, but just because I couldn't believe I was hearing my voice talk without stumbling over everything...! I like the idea of presenting/performing but it usually goes a lot less smoothly than I imagine it to - having said that, this one was the first presenting job in a long time that I'd actually bothered to practise :X
OK-- I finally got around to listening to this. Great job, man. If you were nervous up there, it doesn't come through. Your tone is very natural and conversational throughout. It never sounds like you're searching your memory for the next thing to say.
In addition, I have to say that I'm very honored-- no, you know what, I'm going UK on this one-- I'm very honoured to have been, in any capacity, part of inspiring you to get up there and give this a shot.
And after doing such a good job, I daresay you can't claim that no one's ever heard of you anymore. :)

Thank you so much (sorry, I've been on the road for a while!) And you really did - multiple little comments like this one really stayed with me :) It's something I'd always wanted to do but thought that I would never be confident enough for - but the same's gone for a lot of things in my life (sharing music, lyrics, my voice, my singing voice), and all were 'cured' to a great extent through the furry community.
Now I can't wait to do it again ;)
