~Not_just_a_theory
A place for those who understand that the theory of evolution is not just a theory. A place for those who understand that it is also a demonstrable fact.

Feel free to suggest things to add to this group!
If you have anyquestions, feel free to ask them! And if you would like to do some research on your own I suggest http://www.talkorigins.org/. Especially their section called The FAQ.
It is a great compilation of the most important questions with lots of links to their articles to explain everything in detail.
I would also like to point out that this is NOT an anti-religious group. If you are religious but you also happen to believe that evolution is indeed a fact you are free to join.
Other important groups you should check out:
atheist-furs
sciencefurs
anti-theistfurs
humanistfurs
philosofurs
tolerant-furs
agnosticfurs

Grasping for straws: Fundamental christians vs. evolution.
Disclaimer: I am aware that I said that this is a group about science, not about religion. However, the biggest opponents of evolution in the west are fundamental christians. And they don't just oppose another belief, they oppose a scientific fact that many people have worked very hard for.
Note that I said fundamental christians. I am well aware that there are christians who do know that evolution is a fact and I greatly appreciate that! And I would love it if especially you guys could join this conversation.
What concerns me the most about christians opposing evolution is the way how they do it.
Take these articles for example:
https://www.christiancourier.com/ar.....organ-argument
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-a...../aig-c018.html
http://www.biblelife.org/evolution.htm
The first article compares vestigial organs to sleeve buttons. Really...?
They go on to say that making arguments about vestigial organs is nothing but "groundless speculations". And that birds and reptiles both have scales? Pure coincidences! This has nothing to do with them being related. Let's ignore the fact they they have more in common than just that though, like that they both lay eggs or that they have a similar skull structure.
The second article is agood example how they like to concentrate on one thing and one thing only to prove evolution wrong. In this case the amount of genetic material we have in common with chimps.
Most studies show that we share about 97 to 99% of our genetic material with chimps. But that statement alone is relatively meaningless. It speaks for a general relationship between chimp and homo sapiens but what does this difference mean? Not to mention that we also share 44% of our genetic material with... Honeybees! That's right, we are 44% adorable!
What is important here though are the the finer details. Because what we also share with chimps and all other great apes are endogenous retroviruses. These viruses are part of our genetic material and they are only spread through inheritance from your ancestors. So what does that mean when all great apes share the same retroviruses in their genetic material? That they are all related and that they all have a common ancestor.
I am also curious why DNA tests seem to be good for finding out who your parents are but when you want to use it to find out if you are related to a different animal it's no good? Why?
There are many more pieces of evidence that come from genetics. Evolution was essentially completely set in stone once our knowledge of genetics increased.
The third link is just a top 10 list of why evolution is wrong. I am not going to bother to go through all of these but the first point did catch my attention. I quote:
"One of the best examples of evolution nonsense is the thought that a wingless bird began to evolve a wing. Why this would occur is not answered by evolutionists. The wing stub did not make the bird more adaptable to his environment. The first wing stubs would be much too small for the bird to fly. Why would a bird evolve wing stubs that are useless?"
This is based on a very common misconception. That a new trait is useless while it is developing.
It works completely differently! Repriles didn't just suddenly grow a useless stub. Their existing anatomy changed! What used to be a foreleg changed into what is now a wing.
It also wasn't useless during that process. It was still a leg. This becomes clear when you look at the bone structure of a bird's wing. Because the structure is still just like that of an arm. They have a shoulder joint, an elbow, a carpal joint and a very rudimentay "hand".
In essence, all these supposed counterarguments are based on logical fallicies and misconceptions.
To be blunt, this happens when people who have no idea about science try to argue against science. None of their arguments are based on anything factual. They accuse scientists to make wild speculations while trying to counter their arguments with uneducated and poorly researched hogwash.
These sites are dangerous because they are spreadingobvious lies. And what concerns me the most is that young people are falling for that. They blindly accept it because it is easier to understand than what science teaches us.
We still have a lot of work ahead of us and the educational process has to be adapted so that young people don't fall for these lies anymore.
They are grasping for straws to make their own beliefs work. And they are doing a lot of damage in the process,
Rant over.
