When wandering about Japan, my mate and I kept finding really cute and interesting manga and books at various book stores. Most were used and some were new. Some are somewhat well known like Beastars but most are not very well known as far as I can tell and have few or no translations available.
Because these are furry I thought they deserved some attention and I think other furs will find them interesting. If anyone seems to enjoy these, I'll keep posting starting with the tame ones and moving to the more mature titles.
This first one is Flying Ben ( フライングベン ) by Osamu Tezuka, the same man who brought us Astroboy, Unico and many, many lesser-known titles (here in the US I mean). Tezuka, is considered a god of manga and has done a number of titles based around animals.
Looking at some of his works it is hard to tell if Tezuka was influenced by Carl Barks or the other way around. In any case, you'll see many paralells in look, convention and style among his animals and art in general.
Flying Ben is like a Carl Barks story in that it revolves around animal characters though there are obviously human characters alongside the heroic doggies. This is a "wonderdog story" of 3 dogs who were given a special "medicine" as puppies giving each the power to "fly" by jumping about rather like a rubber ball in rather a ricochet-type fashion (see image).
This is apparently the 2nd book of three and I am still hunting for books 1 and 3. The dogs are really cute and loveable and there's a sweet relationship between Ben and the boy who cares for him.
While not generally available in the US or in English, all 3 books are available on Amazon (for an Enormous Fortune [about $17USD]) for roughly twice the cover price plus shipping.
The last panel shown here shows what any dog owner lives for: the unbridled love of a dog who has been missing you and can't help but give you love and kisses. What could be sweeter? That alone DEMANDED its inclusion in this post.

Tezuka also did "Bagi, the beast of wild nature" about a genetically engineered catgirl. He has done a lot of stories of the good and evil humans can do with knowledge and technology.
I'm only just beginning to explore his work. He has done a *massive* amount of material during his career. He had another I read last year where a man turned into a half-dog. I can't recall the name darn it.
You are absolutely right! Same artist/writer for both of those as well. =3
