When wandering about Japan, my mate and I kept finding really cute and interesting manga and books at various book stores. Most were used and some were new. Some are somewhat well known like Beastars but most are not very well known as far as I can tell and have few or no translations available.
Because these are furry I thought they deserved some attention and I think other furs will find them interesting.
The 2nd manga is Tanuki to Kitsune ( タヌキとキツネ ) by Atamoto. In the unlikely event you're a fur and don't know what a tanuki is, it is an animal native to Japan that looks somewhat like a raccoon more or less but is more closely related to a dog and is in fact a member of the canidae family.
Often the word tanuki is translated as "raccoon-dog" or just "raccoon" in English. Kitsune is just the Japanese word for fox.
Tanuki to Kitsune ( Tanuki and Fox ) is a collection of funny multi-panel comics showing the cute and adorable antics of the two along with some other supporting cast from time to time.
The cover shown above has the fox offering (presumably, my Japanese is not good enough yet) to read tanuki a bed-time story which turns out to be titled "Kachi-Kachi Yama".
Kachi-Kachi Yama is a Japanese folktale about a tanuki who was being a real dick to a farmer who, admittedly was going to eat him. The tanuki returns the favor by murdering the farmer's wife and feeding her to him ala Hannibal as a soup. (Jesus FUCK!)
A resident rabbit on the farm, good friends to the farmer and his late wife, makes it his life's mission to torture the tanuki in various ways in the guise of being helpful which culminates with his ultimately setting the tanuki on fire! (he survives this)
Ah folk tales... so light-hearted and horrifying. =P
This accounts for the look of horror on tanuki's face at seeing the title of the book.
The day-to-day of these two is playful and full of cute rivalry (and contains almost no murder and subsequent unwitting cannibalism) and mostly visual so you don't always miss out if you can't read Japanese. Currently there are at least 6 books out, but I think there may be more now.
These two are very popular in Japan and trying to find merchandise of them isn't always easy outside of akihabara. We spotted many gacha machines (like a gumball machine that dispenses plastic capsules with small toys/figures/etc. inside them) that had them but they were ALWAYS empty.
In the books, the tanuki is rather a derp and the fox is, as you'd expect, always messing with him. There are also anime shorts but I've not seen them. =/
Craploads of merchandise and the manga can be found at amazon.co.jp for reasonable prices (¥950) and at amazon.com here in the US at criminal prices like $26 for one of the manga.
