Chester’s mind was on full sprint mode, no questions asked.
Making his way through the thick of the forest, he barely looked behind his own back this whole time. Furthermore, he barely even paid attention where he was going, as long as he could get as far away as possible. That said, he did at least made sure to stay off of any visible path, so they won’t follow. After a while, Chester was losing steam, but then immediately found a large bush covering the edge of a small ditch. He ran up to it and then dove deep into the bush, hiding himself between the branches.
His face was stuffed with greenery, which made it hard to breathe at first, but he slowly calmed himself down.
What in the world has just happened?
Chester reminisced over what he truly saw. The creature back then was very monkey-like, except its face was flat, its ears were pointy, and it seemed to be very thin down to the bone. Its voice was surreal, a very loud whisper, almost as if he was a snake given a megaphone while holding his nose. They were definitely nothing he has seen before, not even from the fairytale books that Madame Cheshire would give him to read.
There was also this bright flash. They reached out to him, and suddenly he glowed in pure blue light, and soon was making his way as far as possible from those monsters. Wondering from where this light even came from, the little hedgehog boy suddenly heard rustling in the distance.
Was it them?!
Chester buried his face as deep as he could into the bush. Then he picked up the familiar sounding voices.
“Aw, MAL don’t be so down on yourself!” The familiar loud-whisper-through-the-nose-voice came from above the little hedgehog boy. Chester felt something like an icy-cold grip in his heart, his quills must have becoming erect with fear. Hopefully they won’t notice. “I am sure he can forgive us if we can explain it to him!”
“Can you just SHUT UP AND TRY TO FIND THE BRAT BUBON!” A second voice, growly and much scarier than the other came. Unlike the first one, he had a loud voice that almost beat you with its fury. Chester had to make sure not to move from every he heard a syllable hit.
“You know MAL, acting so aggressively all the time can be very bad for your health, I’ve learned about that in this world!”
“That’s so nice to hear! Now if you be a darling, AND START THE DAMN SEARCH!!!”
“Oh, alright. But he could be anywhere.”
“I swear I have to do everything myself! Every detail, every aspect, every-“
“Er, MAL? Uh there’s a…” The voce belonging to Bubon seems to be trying to tell something, only to be drowned out by the latter’s rambling. Which were coming closer, and closer.
Chester had formulated an escape plan by now, but he still wished that the creature would leave him alone already. So he waited.
“And ONE MORE THING! I-“ There was silence. The voices stopped. Only sound he could hear was heavy breathing. It was uncomfortably close.
“Come here.”
That one came from right above him.
“Oh look! A spider!”
Chester raised his head and saw a pair of red hooves right in front of him.
“Would you stop messing around-!”
“Hold still!”
Chester then heard a loud slap, like a hand-across-cheek slap. Chester then felt something heavy pin him down, digging into his back. He felt air escape right out of him, when he had heard, the most unearthly, loudest “YEEEEEOOOOOWOWWWWWWWWWCCHH!!!!” in his life!
Chester looked back up to see the creature for no real reason flying in to the sky. Then he noticed that his quills were still erect.
“You’re welcome MAL! Say, wanna eat that spider later, or I can have it?!” The blue demon shouted right after the red demon, who was still hopping away. Without notice, the boy stood back up and ran away.
As his legs kept carrying him, Chester’s began wondering in his head what could these monsters really be after. Did they think he stole something? Was it the daggers? Should he hand them back? Will they let him go? Up until this point, his life was just a boring-fest of lousy adults and selfish kids, with the only thing driving him forward was his plan. And now, it looks like it’s about to all fall down because of one stupid misunderstanding. Furthermore, will anyone care if he goes missing?
“Stay right where you are you brat!!!” This sounded like that red demon, and from what Chester figured, he was gaining on him. He checked behind his shoulder, but found out that the creature was gaining really fast on him!
Then, Chester noticed two trees positioned really close to one another.
The red demon was getting closer and closer, his stubby legs showing surprising leaping power. Before long, he was already near the boy he of whom he wanted to bite head off, and thus, he gave one big leap.
“Time to dine!”
His maw was right atop of the quilly boy’s head, which begged the question, wouldn’t it hurt if he ate him? That said, it didn’t matter. The boy escaped before it clamped shut, and the demon noticed he got stuck. Looking to each side, he finally noticed the two trees that he got wedged between, never noticing them before due to blind rage.
“BUBON!!!” He yelled, now fueled with more rage.
“Imma comin’!” The blue demon whispered loudly.
Chester not wanting to waste this opportunity, was ready to turn a direction, but stopped when something hot appeared to have passed him. Flaming tongues then sprouted from the ground, creating a wall he couldn’t get through.
“Why do I gotta do everything myself!” Mal growled, coughing up a bit of smoke. This time, he was now aiming to do one thing, and that would be to fry the boy.
He once again opened his maw very widely, showing it to be full of rows of sharp teeth, extending all the way down into a black hole of a throat. However, deep within that hole, a flickering light started to appear, until it grew and grew larger. Slowly but surely, Chester realized that he was about to shoot him with fire!
Realizing the danger, Chester then turned around and immediately went for the side without the fiery wall. However, a ball of hot light flew past him again, blinding the hedgehog a bit and stopping him. Mal was able to create another wall of fire, which now linked into a giant ring. The fire kept its place, not moving at all from its shape.
Chester moved back and took a look around him, trying to find a way out, and yet all that he saw was hot red flames. Finally, the red demon freed himself.
“You!” He roared and began approaching the boy. The red demon was not much taller than Chester, but was definitely bigger, especially with that maw of his. He was breathing heavily, smoke coming from his nose and escaping to the edges of his mouth. His eyes had that same intensity as the fire around him, and then he gritted through his pointy teeth, “Where’s the daggers, you brat?”
The dagger. They really were after it…
“I said where’s-”
“Here!” Mal was taken aback, as his face was slapped with a bag of pointy things. It seems he did not anticipate for the boy to give up so eagerly. But here he was, with the lost bag and the boy, who was now on his knees, pulling out a single dagger with blue hilt from his pocket, offering it out to him.
“…Well, well!” He chuckled, his voice becoming more approving, whilst the fire dimmed, “You know, you REALLY made doing this whole thing a LOT harder, for me! But you turned it around last second!” It seems that the situation was still salvageable, and thus the demon smiled.
He moved closer to the boy, playing with the bag “You know, I thought about killing you here because of all the trouble you did to me, taking my bag, running away, makin’ fool outta me? But now, I’ll just spank ya a bit. That’s all! In fact, I think what you doing right now is just great!”
Chester could now feel his charcoaled like smell from his mouth already, and the demon barely was any closer. But he didn’t move, he simply looked down on his knees, waiting for him to get it over with.
“I tell ya, the boss will get a real chuckle outta this one. HEY BUBON! I THINK BOSS WILL LIKE TO HEAR THIS!” He yelled to his still far away compatriot.
“That’s nice!” Bubon shouted back.
The red demon giggled to himself, and turned around to receive the last dagger he needed. Maybe later, he’ll have the boy fried, just enough for him to survive. However, as he went to reach for it, he was met with a sharp pain in his stomach. The boy was already running off, as Mal looked down, and saw the blue handle sticking from him.
Chester immediately heard the loudest roar, a cross between a scream of pain and a call to wrath. The fire grew in intensity, more so than it ever was before! But he was going for his way out, that small wedge that was between the trees. It linked in a circle, but only because the demon stood in the way to the exit, and now he can get out.
But then, he could feel the heat hitting his back…
