Some close-ups of panels from a two page Brer Rabbit comic I did for Dutch Donald Duck magazine (the Disney comic weekly) last year.
Brer Terrapin is probably the character that appears the most with Brer Rabbit after Brer Fox, Brer Bear and his wife. He is Brer Rabbit's best friend. He makes a small appearance in the animation, but his design in the comics has varied wildly over the years and I had a lot of fun deciding how I was going to draw him for this comic.
Inked with india ink and a sable brush.

Elderly characters from the 1950 often wear civil war hats or uniforms, I've noticed, I guess as a trope to signify that they're old. However, in the Netherlands we totally lack this cultural context, and his hat was interpretated as a mailman's hat and he's sometimes draw delivering mail. His hat is red and his jacket yellow.
An excellent example of that is the cartoon short "Tom Turkey and His Harmonica Humdingers," released by MGM in 1940. One of the characters, an oldster with a hearing trumpet, is shown wearing a Confederate grey uniform. Making him in his 90s, at least, if he was "real." (Gettysburg, for example, had been fought 77 years before, and at the 75th anniversary celebration in 1938, a few oldsters showed up.)

These are so adorable and nostalgic looking, what size paper do you do these inkings on? I don't believe I have ever inked on paper with a brush, but it gives such a signature look
Exquisite tortoise... now in panels! (terrific bunneh too.. er, rabbit)... :D
