Chester woke up with a creaking sound coming outside his bedroom. He raised his head from the old, flat rag he calls a pillow and looked around himself. Up to ten kids were sharing room with him, most of them the oldest of the orphanage, and all were soundly sleeping. He lied down again, somewhat unsure if he wants to go back to sleep. He could just leave, to his caretaker’s annoyance, and snatch a book from downstairs and read it under the lamp. He was only caught thrice, and each of those times she wasn’t asleep as well. Honestly, he really didn’t want to sleep. His thoughts about the day just wouldn’t stop bothering him.
“Why oh why I still can’t believe the amount the trouble you ALWAYS have to get yourself into, Chester!” Madame Cheshire did not even bother to look when she yanked the boy out from the nurse’s office. The pink flamingo lady was trying to warn against unnecessary force, but the Madame was too much into ranting to listen. Chester was not exactly happy himself, in particular of being let go early. Apparently, despite being found lying unconscious in the middle of the forest and away from the broken shed, aside from scrapes and cuts he was perfectly fine. A fact that Chester was more and more felt annoyed about. “Once we come back, you will explain what you did back there!”
I don’t think I even can do that, he thought, and why me of all people!?
He soon noticed the glances of passerby, each of whom were making their way to the center of the town. This in itself wasn’t a common occurrence, as by now, most of them have come to know the little “spiky delinquent”. And since the orphanage was situated pretty close to the Town Centre, it was just as common to take notice of the old cat lady screaming her head off, while the boy guilty and defiantly stared away. In fact, the orphanage has been noted to stand out in its run-down appearance, with old-fashioned black-wood design and overgrown lawn with crooked fences on its sides. It was rather comical to see it stand not that far away from town’s more attractive stores full off food, fashion and even retail.
But, to Chester, all of the eyes of the people meant little. His memory even now was hazy and at best pretty much make-believe. Magic fires? Red and blue demons? A voice in his head? He would rather believe that he just got scared made stuff up or something. Yet how could he explain that he was found in the middle of the forest? Perhaps he ran from attackers who were ransacking Mr. Wood’s place. By the way, he heard that the woodpecker was also okay, but got a concussion.
Finally, both reached the half-open fence and then entered through the front door that needs to be pulled twice to unstick it. After the first one, Chester could hear everyone immediately scatter inside, no doubt not wanting to be caught by the cat lady herself lest in her foul mood. Not that Madame would pay attention to them, considering her poor eyesight and hearing. Still, she stopped as soon as she entered the main hall, noticing something.
“Why did everyone stopped?” There was a bucket full of water sitting in the middle of the guest room beside the hall. “Unless you want to come along with Chester and me, you’ll get back to work!” Immediately few of the kids came out from behind the couch and resumed their weekly cleaning.
Chester was led upstairs, hearing some snickering between the kids from below, little brats that they are and into her bedroom. It doubled as her office and was right beside the one which Chester sleeps in.
Madame Cheshire closed the door and let him to sit at an empty stool, whereas she went to a nearby cupboard and took some medicine out, presumably for migraine. Chester paid attention to how many she would take, to assess how bad she was feeling. This time it was three, not too bad, he guessed he’ll at least has to be polite and answer everything. The room itself was rather cramped, if he stretched his legs, he’ll bump his legs against the desk. There were a few, old-timey pictures hanged on the walls, like one with her younger self posing with another wolf-lady, and another with a young chubby cat baby. These were the only friendly things of her office.
“Now tell me everything, from the start” Madame Cheshire said, finally sitting at her desk.
He was able to tell Madame about what he remembered, which surprisingly, came off a lot smoother than he expected it. He told her that he came in, heard a noise, ran away, and then woke up in the middle of the forest. Hard to imagine why, but Madame Cheshire wouldn’t believe him. Probably because it rather was farfetched and barely explained anything to her at all.
She definitely thinks I am at fault, he thought to himself. No real reason to believe so, it just seems to be exactly as it should go. He gets into trouble, and it will be his fault somehow.
Sadly, it also means that he has to forego his earlier plans for now. If everybody is freaking out about some creature, even worse, some criminal, on the loose, than he’d better lay low. If only I didn’t get that bag mixed up with mine! He bemoaned to himself.
Speaking of, he immediately checked under his mattress. It was still there, although the daggers are spilled out a bit. The bag was given to him and he was allowed to take home, no problem. Reaching carefully with his hand, Chester without noise took a dagger to a closer inspection, and found something interesting. Each one had a handle of different color, like green, red, pink (actually magenta, not that he cared). There were overall six of them. The weirdest part, now that he was thinking about it, the only one missing was the light-blue one he had from before. It wasn’t anywhere on his person, so could it possibly be in the forest?
Chester sighed, “Guess I’ll check tomorrow”. Putting it away, the hedgehog checked around again and went back to lie on his bed. With the only noise being the chirping from out the window, Chester’s eyelids grew heavy as he felt the spell of sleep taking effect on him. Relenting to it, the hedgehog was beginning to sleep, when he heard a some steps and peeked from one eye to see a shape by the door. At this point, it was likely delirium, but then he noticed it coming closer to him. And is it moved closer, the more defined the person became. Chester opened his eyes wide, and yet the figure never disappeared. He was tall person, with shiny pieces on is body and had a head full of wild hair. Once he stood close enough, as he slowly bent down, enough for Chester to make out blue fur on him, and the person then stared him in the eyes.
“So, tis is you. From now on, we shall be together,” he said in deep voice.
He slightly smiled at the boy.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Chester responded using falsetto voice.
Everybody in the bedroom immediately woke up from their sleep, as Chester pushed his back against the wall. The blue faced-figure then taken aback and, seemingly, panicked as the kids around got up.
“A thief! There’s a thief!” Chester yelled to everyone. And yet much to his annoyance, nobody would look into the direction of the figure. That man then turned around and walked towards the door. “He’s going away!”
“What is all this noise!” Madame Cheshire’s shrill came from the other room.
Chester sprung from his bed and immediately ran after the “thief”. As he entered the hallway, he was met with the face of very old, very cranky cat lady.
“We need to catch the thief!”
“What thief?”
Chester darted by her without warning and was already near the stairs that led to main hall. Flying all the way downstairs he went to grab the doors, hoping to catch the thief going outside, but found himself for a surprise when it wouldn’t budge. In fact, checking it, the door appeared to be locked.
“Chester! Explain yourself this instant!”
“There’s a thief in our house! The door is locked, he must have came from one of the windows or the back door.”
“CHESTER!”
The shriek was loud enough to stop him on his tracks.
C’mon, he thought, don’t tell me you’re gonna get mad for trying to catch some weirdo dude in a kids room!?
“What’s going on?” The young mouse asked nervously behind Madame Cheshire.
“Mimmy! Didn’t you see the man by your bed?” Chester called out to her. While he waited for her approving response, he was instead met with what could possibly be the most shivering revelation that could come from a little girl.
“What man? There wasn’t anyone there. You were yelling outloud.”
Slowly, the stare of other kids became much more pronounced for the hedgehog. Everyone, mixed in confusion and anger, silently surrounded Chester with their untouchable aura throughout the room.
“Chester, what is it that you are doing!?” Madame Cheshire loudly yelled.
He checked around again. Nothing, nothing came to him to show where the man went. No trace left behind. And no support from anyone.
Chester was alone.
…
“Huff, huff, c’mon BUBON, wake up! We gotta face the boss together! I need you support man!”
“…”
“Damnit! Azure, damn you to hell!”
