Ace the jackal and Kristania the ringtail cat, exploring the jungles of Iriomote Jima together (a little island thats part of Okinawa, south of Japan). Surprisingly, they come across a friendly wildcat - a yamamayaa (also known as iriomote yamaneko, or iriomote mountain cat, which are extremely endangered, and there are estimated less than 100 left in the wild), and another watches on cautiously from nearby...
I did this piece as a gift for my wife ayukawataur, and the characters Ace and Kristania (aka Misty) belong to her and I.
The art was done with micron pen and acrylic paints on 11"x14" illustration board.
Overall time taken about 55-60 hours.

i quote my lj here:
'i am very much impress and pleased with the final work. every thing from the atmospheric perspective, the detail of the native flora, the characters ace & kristania, and the yamamayaa. all of it is beautiful. she has capture the feel of a jungle perfectly. better than any other i have seen in the past. and, she has manage to bring to life the concept i had, ace & kristania, two very important characters of ours, meeting the ancestors of my avatar, the ayukawataur. and, in a very loose yet direct way, having a form of string tied from her to them.
there is no way, other than being able to have a pet yamamayaa here, that i could be more pleased with this. she has, again, done far more than i did think was possible.'

I'm so happy that you are as happy with it as you are =D.

O.O That is an awesome picture! love all the details you put into it :3
The detail in this is rather exquisite, along with the anatomy. It's such a wonderful scene, and it's so well done. <3
Just incredible, the time and effort you've put in it this is just jaw dropping.
Fantastic work.
Fantastic work.
That background is absolutely stunning. I love scenery pics like this. And that cat is to cute :)
surely many people/furries say that, but your artwork is so beautiful O.O
There is so much attention to detail! Especially the mud on the paws! Simply lovely! :D
Thank you =D I was hoping that detail would be noticed ^.^
When I went to Costa Rica last year, I had a chance to experience this type of ecosystem - and on our hikes I was surprised with how muddy we got - it was just unavoidable =) So I used that memory here...

Sweet! We actually had a nature trail at my old elementary school I went to for the first time in 10 years back on Wednesday. It was overgrown, run down, but I could still remember the paths and it was fun to trek it, until I fell into a big hole while focusing on my camera. ^^
Hiking is so much fun and Costa Rica sounds simply much more epic lol! Glad to hear you had fun and it left an impression. :)

this is amazing and so cute! I love the detail and the scene its really peaceful.
If you didn't know already, I've already said it... But this picture is just jaw-dropping. You've paid so much attention to detail, it's almost hard to even believe your eyes... This is beautiful.
I'm not lying when I say that this is the best picture I have seen from you, and one of the best picture I've seen to date. Just looking at it makes me wish I could be there with them..
Kristina has a very pretty face. I never really noticed that... No offence ^^;
Again Kacey, this is amazing! =D

Okinawa is truly one of the most fascinating places in the world! Excellent work as always.
Okiniwa, atsui na.....
I love the way the stream fits into that picture, really neat. You've captured Okinawa wonderfully, lots of history there, lots of depth in this picture that just seems to fit it.

Semii, god, cicadas, you really take them for granted until they're gone.
Then when you go back to think about your summer in Japan, the first thing you recall (or one of the first) is the noise of cicadas. And trying to catch them. And getting pissed on by them...

I've heard Kacey Miyagami was a pro and absolute god when it comes to artwork but this picture sure raised my opinion of her even higher.
This is totally being put in my favorites.

Wow, so beautiful..! x33
This is what I love about anthro art. Beautiful art with great expressions, an amazing style and wonderful colouring. And it's just sweet, innocent, fun..! This is what I'd call perfect art, to be honest! x333

I can't help but think that if one of such a rare species is already 'tame', then that doesn't bode well for the rest of the species... alas.

It always amazes me to see how much detail goes into your backgrounds.
Quoting myself from Ayukawataur's page.
"Been waiting on this!

Amazing lighting, especially in the background where the lighter colors are used.
Astonishingly beautiful!
I love how, at a distance, they blend into the scenery; When you enlarge it (as if you're stepping closer) you see all the wonderful details.
Well done!

One thing I like about your art is how genuine the expressions seem, and this piece really shows that.

Damn- thats one amazing background. Too bad for the cats.... We need to do something. ><
your paintings never cease to amaze me-- you have a wonderful grasp on lighting and color. you certainly know how to bring a picture to life! the sketch was awesome as well, but this really is alive and lovely. i find it nice that you can put a lot of emotion into your art, as well as craftsmanship and plain-ole skill (:
WHA!!! Kacy! O.O AMAZING! *finger-lip-blibbleblabble*

Fan-freaking-tastic. One thing I adore over most others is nature scenes like that.
Gorgeous.

It is very sad - and most of the threat to the cats these days, is that they are often hit by cars... they are of course protected, but theres only so much they can do.
Adorable kitty!
And that background is so intricate! So much work

gorgeous image. it seems nice and full with plenty going on. very pleasant.
This is one of the most beautiful drawings I've seen here on FA. There is just so much detail in all areas of the picture. From the fine details in the foreground to the abundant and diverse vegetation and rock formations in the background, everything is just so stunning.
Oh, and this drawing has a Jackal too, one of my favorite Canid species :D

Great scenery and detail work; the poses and moment are captured very well! My only suggestion would concern the ringtail cat's eyes, which seem a little off. Still, it's a very small crit in a very wonderful work.
The sense of dappled light is wonderful!

yayy you finished it! Talk about capturing the moment and great job on the light filtering through the trees. I love how you captured the jungle, makes you want to yearn to hike through it.
Astonishingly lovely. You have been my favorite artist ever since I found FA, and your skill continues to improve. You are utterly AMAZING!
Outstanding I love the background! It wraps around you! Is the yamamayaa related to the ocelot ?
Thank you =)
I don't think it has much relation to the ocelot, any more than most wild cats have to one another - they do look somewhat similar..
I think they are a more primitive version of wildcat - having lived on an island that until the last 50 years or so was undisturbed by people, so I think the island itself has a rather unique ecology, though it seems typical of tropical regions.

I am going to look this area a bit it intrigues me. *hugs* your wife is a lucky woman. just my opinion
I dont think the thick layer of acrylics can handle the stamp... I've been using the stamp on pieces where there is some blank paper space on which to use it... Although I should run a few tests to see how it manages on layered media.
This may be your best image yet, Kacey. A wonderful image, in all sorts of ways!
Incredible! This deserves to be hung up in a place of honor in your home. An amazing piece, and filled with life!
Another beautiful job. The amount of detail never ceases to amaze!
I hope there's some sort of protection program for the yamamayaa :(

Oh wow, this is SO beautiful! I love all the foliage and the dappled effect on the characters. You really outdid yourself on this one! :)
Wow Kacey, this is beautiful! You have a great grasp on environmental painting and character interaction with said environment. I just love the composition and the textures you've achieved. Well done, SO worth all your hard work!
This is really beautiful. I've been leaving it open on my second monitor and a pseudo background all day.
This is one of your best works in recent memory. I especially like the way the girls are drawn, especially Kristania.
Niiice, I can tell you really went all out on this one!! Love the scene, and the background!
You are so very talented and you have a wonderful style. I never get enough of your art.
hmm i think you gave me a reason to visit oki now if this is an actual area lol
Kacey you draw so wonderful =3 I all pictures in your gallery so beutiful ideas and artwork
Everything here is so wonderfully done! The trees and animals, and even the blue butterfly so pretty!~
This is amazing drop-dead gorgeous... will you possibly be selling prints?
I could offer you a print on 8.5"x11" glossy photo paper for $10 plus shipping/handling ($8 within the US, or a bit more internationally depending on the destination).
I'll also have prints with me at AC and next years FC
I'll also have prints with me at AC and next years FC
I probably won't be making it to AC, but let me see if I can find a good mailing address and then I will definitely be taking you up on that offer! thank you!
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this already but I love the use of the butterfly to show how gentle the cats are, how it's not even concerned about them. :)
my god such beautiful work! The detail and everything! A great inspiration you are!
Wow!
Very beautiful Dear.
I love all the detail.
Absolutely Stunning!

This is amazing! I love the atmosphere you've created through the trees and all the detail in the roots. The characters really look like they fit in with the surroundings. Really beautiful
I'm really impressed by the detail you put in the setting/background. The four legged critters are cute too. I want to hug one heh heh.
Impressed by the level of detail.. as always! This is really lovely :)
This is such an amazing piece, and I think it's actually my favorite from you so far! I love it when artists place furries in such realistic situations, and the detail is absolutely amazing! <3 Love it!
WOW!! While the characters are a bit cartoony for me, the background and detail is AMAZING!!
Maya! I loved this type of cat when I was first introduced to them in Azumangadaioh. Excellent work!
Very lovely piece, Kacey. Thanks for sharing. :)
I don't know what it is about your style of art, but I absolutely love it. The lighting looks great (especially how you did the background), the perspective was well done with the little guy in the foreground, and details like wearing appropriate clothing, the backpack and the camera around her neck really add to the piece and make it greater than the sum of its parts. I think the girls' expressions are really cute, as so is the little guy's. I like the technique you used with the foliage, and the vegetation as a whole. This is a great scene.
oo oo oo!! they're outside THEy'RE OUTSIDE! they look really good outside! very awesome picture. I actually really dug on the dedication to the iriomote yamaneko. It made me go look them up ^ ^
GREAT JOB your characters look really alive in this picture. The background has so much going in it, I want to go visit!

Looks lovely. Hehe I am actually in Okinawa right now, you did a great job of capturing its beauty. Great job! :)
was waiting for the colored version of this, worth the wait defiantly
Makes it feel real, furries and what not, clearly putting in that amount of time proves you can't be human and that for an art cyborg you produce the most super-fantastic work. Literally made me gasp (well not like OMG WOOOW more suttle :P)
You really have gotten your art to the point where I don't even feel worthy commenting on it. There's nothing helpful I could say beyond gushing over it.
Ahhhh! This is what we were talking about on monday! Beautiful work, Kacey! <3
Thanks very much ^.^! When you come over you can see it in person =)
Wow. Words simply fail me here. Far, far more amazing than anything I can express
there is a long time that your art haven't smash me like that.
a really really great job. i guess i will never say it enough.
my favorit artist forever =^^=

Lovely picture, though I have to admit I am particularly in love with the iriomote yamaneko. They look so perfect! I wish more people knew about these amazing little cats.
Absolutely beautiful work. Thank you for sharing.
I would really love to watch you sketch, ink, and paint a piece from beginning to end. You've got such amazing talent - it seems like a mystery how you make your art. It would be so cool to see it unravel from beginning to end. You're awesome! :D
i love it - it rembers me at one of my first digital pics i animated a bit (because of cat and jungle) ...may be i should upload at least somewhat here in FA to show what i mean :)
WOW! So beautiful. So much detail. Would have taken so long to do.
the picture is just so beautiful it brings me to tears almost.
The details on the trees and forest is just immense,
a seriously inspiring picture and a pleasure to look at.

your landscapes are really incredible, this coming from a landscape designer
Absolutely exquisite! The details on the picture are absolutely stunning. There is so much going on, there's always something new to see in it. It looks amazingly detailed without seeming overly cluttered
My God, this is beautiful. The image is so immersive and all the detail is just perfect.

Seriousness aside, this is yet another amazing pic.

Beautiful indeed, the level of detail in this image is beyond words >.< id die just thinking on doing that many details! xD such a beautiful background, forest/jungles are never easy >.<
On and off I've been an avid outdoors-person most of my life, even taking a degree in a physical science which required plenty of field research while in college. This speaks to me in ways I can't describe. It's both touching and beautiful.
for some reason it looks so like watercolor instead of acrylic...how do you get this effect? I love it! :D
=) Thank you
Since it is fluid acrylic, I apply it very much in the same way one would do with watercolor - it just has a different opacity and it layers as it dries, where watercolor mixes even after its dried once you get it wet again...
But generally its just acrylics thinned down with water applied with light washes.

i've never seen this before...you have inspired me to try it :) Is it easy to control?
I recommend trying it =D. I think its easier than using the full body acrylics - but it takes some getting used to any new medium/technique...
the brand that I use is Golden fluid acrylics. They come in little squeezy bottles rather than tubes.

do you have to special order it or can you get it at the typical art store like Michael's? I'm sure it's better than using gauche (mix between acrylics and watercolor in essence of the way it flows and handles.) I had to use that crap in college and HATED it with a fiery passion! But i love to paint so much and my fav is oils but can't since i'm pregnant i can't since i would have to deal with paint thinner
Well, I don't think Michaels has a very good selection of art supplies, to be honest - I think they are more of a craft store than an art store - but most art stores should have it - I don't know what chains of art store are national and what are local, but I think maybe Pearl might be a national chain. I shop at Art Media which is a Portland chain. Or you could order the stuff online from DickBlick
When I paint with oils, I have begun using a non-toxic paint thinner/solvent - its called Turpenoid Natural - so that would be something thats likely safe to work with when pregnant or with kids around. Although the solvent is non-toxic, the paints themselves are still toxic so its probably good to do what you are doing and stay away from them for the time being.
I need to try gouache someday - I've wanted to for ages but I haven't bought myself a set yet. It just sounds so interesting!

55-60 hours, wow. I totally just found this randomly and it has to be one of the best pieces I've ever seen on this site. I'm so glad other artist's are willing to spend that much time doing this stuff, as opposed to wasting the day gaming or what have you. I myself have really started getting into painting, and I wouldn't be surprised if I have spent more than 50 hours on some works. Unfortunately they are not anthro/furry based, but I really do need to post them here after all the work I put into them. please keep doing this kinda stuff, It makes me happy!
The details and colors are just amazing! Very few (well, perhaps none other than you, actually) furry artists spend so much time for that. Good job!
I think I am drowning in the sheer beauty that is this picture. I have never seen something so lovingly crafted or beautifully executed. I can feel the characters' shared amazement and joy at finding such an animal out in the wild just from their expressions. I bow to your greatness, Kacey. I bow to it and go blind from the radience of your artistry.
Your detail is amaIng.
I am at a loss for words to sufficiently describe how very beautiful this is!

FREAKING CRAZY!!!! YOU GOT MAD SKILLS BRO!! WICKED!! KEEP IT UP
Wow I wish people would comment like this on my story.
By the way your great Kacey. Sorry for my pouting I have no views from anyone on my account.

Am I the only one here who finds this picture completely ironic?
Have to admit Kacey, I didn't see this when you put it up but now that I see it... Wow. o.O it's breath taking. To me it makes sense that the cats are friendly since the girls likely have an animal scent to them unlike humans. But this is just beautiful.
wait.... I never actually faved this?
yet I've stared at it a couple of times, must've been blinded from the button by the amazing art :o

Wow, somehow I just came across this piece, and the Iriomote kitty caught my eye. My boyfriend's fursona is an Iriomote, and I've never seen any art of one outside of commissions of his character.
wow. my mate (the one above) pointed this out to me and i must say that it's an exquisite piece. i'm also surprized anyone else knows about or pays attention to the iriomote cat.
Stunning!
The scenery, the colours, just wow! I can't stop staring at it. I know it took you ages but I think it was worth every minute!

That's perhaps the most detailed picture I have came across on this website if not others. The scenery is loaded with details and so beautiful, the characters are still fleshed out despite so much going on, and the colorization makes it complete like a masterpiece. I can't tell you how fantastic this truly is, you've must of busted yourself finishing this. Just brilliant work you have here.
I love the way you've done the background! Those mountain cats are awesome too, look like my cats.
This is an Amazing piece of work, both Adorable & full of life, Makes me smile~
