"We are now traveling to the Sol System to intercept Rynar troops who have invaded a sovereign Pre-FTL species."
Klieth spoke as his squadron quickly got into their positions before their bunks. Their commander had barely given them any chance to prepare, and many soldiers were in their night clothes. He eyed them all and made a visible relaxing of his shoulders before glancing down.
"I understand that we were due a vacation after the Keplar system, and I know this has gotten in the way of plans for many of you."
The man cast a side eye at his Sergeant, who already seemed aggravated about this abrupt change. Klieth continued talking as if he hadn't seen her death glare.
"There is nothing I can do to turn this ship around, but if any of you are uncomfortable, feel free to tell me now or in private, and I will do my best to accommodate you however I can. There are positions on this vessel that need attending, and I'm sure the janitors would happily accept volunteers."
He smiled, his tail wagging softly as several chuckles resounded around the room. Giving a second for his troops to speak, he was pleasantly surprised when a young blue Jahkatian spoke up.
"We get to see an alien world AND be the good guys? Let the wimps scrub the bathrooms. I'm with you on the ground, sir!"
Klieth smiled more thoroughly as the Jahkatian stepped back to her bunk. Many other troops agreed with her, and Klieth enjoyed the atmosphere. Letting the soldiers murmur with one another before he checked his Yutri with their orders.
"In that case, we'll be letting Sevron squadron have those slots... We beat them in the sims, and now let's see if we beat them in this..."
As he checked off, for now, making a note of the few soldiers that still seemed unsure. Though he was about to speak again, Klieth saw that his second in command, Sergeant Matrilik, was practically fuming. Her brow furrowed, and he squinted slightly at her, hoping to quell whatever she might say. His glare did little to halt her frustration.
"Klieth, sir. Do we not have a choice in this reassignment? I thought the UAF would allow a choice for such a dangerous operation?"
Klieth held his breath still in his chest, keeping a professional demeanor as he picked apart her words. Nodding a moment later, he addressed the whole of the group.
"That is right. Regretfully, there sadly is no choice in this reassignment. Although with extreme circumstances come extreme measures. Communications have been sent through the Extranet to your families about this abrupt reassignment. Although details are omitted for security reasons."
He knew this answer was dodgy and silently hoped Matrilik would take this at face value. While he liked that she would prod into the subject, she undermined his authority before the squadron. Even if he liked this no more than the next person, he forced himself to smile and keep his tail wagging.
"Is it not the Union's law that any altercation on sovereign soil, much less Pre-FTL, was strictly prohibited?"
Klieth grit his teeth, and his gaze meets Matriliks while he tries formulating a response. Though forcing his gaze from her, he looks to the room and offers out a hand.
"If enough of us compile together, the Union may be forced to send us back for our vacation. Sergeant Matrilik, could you arrange that? Would anyone like to volunteer to sign then?"
He watched as a fire ignited in her eyes, her ears bending back in shame as he ousted her before the group professionally. Though despite Matrilik's aggressive attitude, the young Jahkatian spoke up again.
"I'd rather be on the ship cleaning than be sent back home... Won't sit right, knowing we just left a species like that... I vote to continue, Sergeant Matrilik."
She directed the last part to the Lupari woman, and another soldier joined a moment later.
"I'd save some animals with sticks rather than stay on this ship for one more day!"
As more and more joined in, Klieth turned his attention to Matrilik.
"Are you keeping tally, Sergeant?"
He could see the anger rising in her, though he pretended not to notice as he spoke to the group.
"In three days, we will arrive in the distressed system. None of you are considered on active duty until day three. Each soldier may have sixty credits at the cafeteria's bar; tell them to put it on my tab."
Klieth smiled as many of the soldiers murmured louder. All the while, though, Matrilik was silently simmering.
"But I expect you to be ready and unhindered by the time we arrive. Do I make myself clear?"
The room practically shook with a resounding cry from his soldiers.
"Sir, yes, sir!"
Klieth smiled and soon dismissed himself so his subordinates could discuss without their commander looming over them. The Lupari crossed his arms behind his back as he walked down the white halls. After turning towards the officer's quarters, he heard a second pair of footsteps down the hall moments later, rapidly catching up with him.
Despite her anger, Matrilik wouldn't confront him in a public space, and as he opened his door and walked in, not a second passed of the door closing before her anger burst out.
"What was that?!"
Klieth seized a round red bottle of Arkatian Firebrandy from under his desk. Grabbing at first one glass, then glancing up at the angry Lupari before grabbing another. He didn't answer her as he poured each glass halfway.
Lifting it, he took a sip and winced at the burn. Only to then turn his attention to his Sergeant and calmly state.
"Sergeant Matrilik, you questioned my authority in front of the crew. Do you think that is appropriate?"
Matrilik didn't seem to catch onto his tone and soon waved her arm up before growling.
"Klieth? You're joking, right? You told everyone that we would not get a vacation after six months of patrol. And you're asking me if questioning that is appropriate? Am I not allowed to voice my opinions like others?"
Her voice was raised, though not overly so. The man noted this and calmly set his glass down after finishing it.
"You are right."
His words left Matrilik stunned, having expected him to contest her standing. But when she simmered down after a moment, he continued with a raise of his eyebrow.
"Right on voicing your opinion, Sergeant Matrilik. The Sergeant's role is to carry out the Lieutenant's orders, personal feelings about a situation aside. You are perfectly free to voice your opinion. However, questioning my orders before the crew is unacceptable."
Matrilik tensed up, unsure of how to respond. When she didn't speak, Klieth continued while keeping his eyes locked with hers.
"It is the Sergeant's job to carry out the Lieutenant's orders. Any direct questions of authority should be spoken in private, where I will address them professionally. If you feel uncomfortable with what we have been assigned, I will transfer you to this ship's crew and promote Specialize Sazha in your place for as long as this operation continues."
Klieth smiled politely, even though it pained him when he saw Matrilik's tail scrunch up behind her.
"I would not put it into your career record as a reprimand, simply as a temporary transfer. I don't believe in punishing any soldier for not wanting to partake in this operation."
He fell silent, watching his Sergeant for a time. She sobered up quickly, and despite sounding forced, she nodded and spoke in a much more professional tone.
"Sir, I would like to remain at my post."
Nodding, Klieth spared her his gaze for a moment to glance to his table. Tapping the other glass, he spoke in a stern tone.
"Then I expect you to follow my guidelines and the UAF officer handbook. I will not tolerate disobedience, especially in a circumstance like this."
The Lupari woman kept her feet firmly on the ground, slowly putting her hands to her sides as she tried to grasp the situation.
"Yes, sir."
Klieth then notioned to the door.
"Dismissed."
Matrilik, without question, turned and began to walk to the door, though she was stopped as Klieth turned his gaze back and spoke again.
"Sergeant Matrilik, I am sorry."
Despite her ears folded back against her head and her tail tucked stoically to her rear, she nodded and met his gaze.
"No sir, I was the one out of line. I am the one to apologize. Could you please overlook this incident?"
Seeing her like this hurt the man, but he forced himself to nod and agreed.
"Of course. Make sure it doesn't happen again, and I will not log this incident."
Matrilik bit her lip, averting her gaze from the man. Several long seconds pass before Klieth speaks in a quieter voice. His tone shifted from that of a UAF officer to a worried lover.
"Going to leave without sharing a drink, fluffbutt?"
The female Lupari broke out into a low laugh as she sniffled. Nodding her head before stepping over. Without pausing, she downed the glass and looked to the ground. After a moment, Klieth reached over and tugged her chin to meet his gaze.
"I'm sorry, but someone has to keep you in check. It hurts me just as much as it hurts you, but when I say we go, we go."
Klieth smiled as Matrilik did, and soon she pushed her head to his, pressing her snout against his carefully.
"Don't verbally spank me so hard next time... Sir..."

Humans and UTO combined do plenty of that, but it’s of course the human nukes that does the finishing blow.
Nice to see more of this guy. They did have a nice relationship.
Also interesting to see the attitudes of the average soldier to getting involved in this situation.

Yee! Not sure how much else I can explore on him. But will be delving into Matrilik more later on, post war
