The ship lurched, giving a sinking feeling to the Falashai captain. He'd been told FTL gets easier over time, but he was far from used to it.
Before them now hung an asteroid field. In the center of it, tucked away amidst asteroids locked in place, sat a lone rogue vessel. The damaged ship of a Pirate lord on the run. It barely escaped capture meer hours before and had stopped to conduct repairs in the cover of asteroids.
"Open communications."
The UAF captain ordered while tapping his holopad. After fixing his suit, he stood and sent a video message to the rogue vessel.
"This is Captain Yaine of the UAF Carrier Trinnin's Spirit. You are in breach of galactic law, stand down and await arrest, or we will open fire."
The pirate vessel drifted silently for a time. It sat attached to the asteroid with metal beams. Floating along aimlessly in space. Yaine turned his eyes to his communications officer and tilted his head. The officer shook her head.
"No response, sir."
Several seconds pass before Yaine nods and sighs.
"Status on Lupari Confederacy reinforcements?"
The officer checked her pad, not looking up as she called out.
"Lupari Fleet has answered our aid request, and they are sending the Corvette LNC Spearhead. T-Minus one minute."
The bridge's red warning lights began blaring, and the pirate vessel flashed in the distance. Yaine growled before shouting out.
"All units to position; we are under fire!"
The bridge erupted into tempered chaos as soon as Yaine sat back down. He watched as the pirate ship engaged its thrusters, slowly turning the asteroid to aim its munitions at the UAF vessel.
Within a split second, Erestal canons from the enemy vessel spewed out. Bombarding the UAF Carrier with heated munitions. The flaming rounds sputtered and dissipated before the bridge's window. An officer on the lower bridge called out, having to shout over the warning sirens.
"Shield is holding, sir!"
The Commander nodded, turning his attention to a flickering space beside the asteroids. While the pirate vessel began concentrating its fire, the Falashai Captain's eyes glistened as he spotted a flickering light in the space next to them. One of his crew called out with a hint of enthusiasm.
"Sir! Signature warping in! It's the Lupari vessel!"
The pirate vessel continued its bombardment against the Carrier's impregnable shields. Blue Erestal flickered and rocked violently against a nearly invisible barrier around the vessel. Yaine knew his ship could withstand such bombardment, but even a Carrier had its limits.
With a bright flash, a long blue pointed ship exited FTL. Its nose shifted to aim toward the pirate vessel. Not bothering to hail the pirate ship, twelve repeater cannons swivel to lock onto the target.
Hundreds of tiny fragmented Erestal bolts crashed against the Pirate's shield. After a moment, the ship's spinal mount was in position, ready to show the sheer might of the Lupari Confederacy. The battlefield was illuminated as jagged fingers of high-intensity lightning jolted from the Lupari vessel's canon. Overpowering the Rouge Ships shields, letting its weaker munitions pierce through to the armor.
Not wanting to squander the moment, the Falashai Captain raised his hand and grinned.
"Send out Sentinel squadron; make sure drones escort them!"
While the Carrier had powerful shields, its firepower was heavily outshined as the Lupari ship continued its thunderous bombardment. Rapid-fire lights soared through space toward the unprotected pirate vessel. Its armor faltered under the heavy firepower, letting the Lupari's heavier canons take shots at its guns. Overwhelming the pirate ship's defenses, rendering their guns to molten slag.
While the fight was almost over as soon as it began, the Falashai was pleased with his early victory. The window before them glistened as a transmission came through. A black Lupari woman in an array of medals appeared on the screen. Her arms were behind her back as she spoke dutifully.
"This is Captain Brishtazul of the Lupari Corvette LNC Spearhead. We've answered your assistance call, providing fire support."
The Falashai smiled, taking a moment to examine the woman's medals before nodding.
"I am Captain Yaine Briotch of the UAF Carrier Trinnin's Spirit. We are deploying fighter drones... Though I believe you mistranslate the term, 'fire-support.'"
Brishtazul nodded, a slight grin forming, calling to her crew; the spindle ship fired its side burners to evade piddly potshots from the pirate vessel. Turning her eyes to the young Falashai, her eyebrow rose as she stared at the younger Falashai.
"Understood; we will maintain targeted fire on the vessel's armaments then. Moving behind you, Captain Yaine."
As she spoke, the Lupari Corvette turned on its side, exposing its underbelly for a moment where more canons could fire. At the same time, it moved into a defensive position beside the much larger Carrier.
With a soft hum from the Carrier's hangar bays, two dozen robotic drones catapulted out from the sides of the spacecraft. Automatically coordinating themselves into four groups of six. Spiraling into defensive swarms as it awaited orders.
Yaine's eyes turned, and he watched Sentinel squad's gunship fly out among the taxi of drones. The few guns of the pirate ship attempted to take potshots at the boarding crew, though these guns were quickly destroyed. Once the boarding crew got in the pirate vessel's blind spot, Yaine smiled and hailed the Commander over comms.
"Keep to the mission. Infiltrate and disable their FTL drive; we don't need any unpleasant surprises. Keep me informed on your mission, Commander."
There was static as a response, and he sighed before tapping his screen; turning to his communications officer, Yaine called out.
"Status?"
A young Ra'Lai communications officer adjusted her dials but soon shook her head.
"We've lost communication, sir; The pirate vessel has a short-range jammer. Our drones are on automatic orders. We can't contact Sentinel Squadron."
Nodding, he called to his pilot as more Erestal slugs dissipated on their shields. Seeing that the pirate ship's dwindling firepower couldn't hope to break the Carrier's protection now, he smiled.
"Turn twenty degrees port, give our Lupari friends some cover."
Tuning his communications back to the Lupari vessel, he let himself take an arrogant air while he smiled. The Falashai reveled for a moment, only to nod his head towards the grizzled Lupari veteran.
"Still as quick as ever, Captain Brishtazul. Your age has not overridden your senses yet."
Captain Brishtazul grimaced, squinting while she motioned her crew to ease down the bombardment. With the pirate vessel no longer able to fire back, she hoped to keep their shields down rather than destroy the vessel.
"A Lupari never grows slow; they learn to take their time when needed. A pup will take time to learn such things. If the pirate vessel had kinetic or ballistic weaponry, your open approach would have left you vulnerable, pup."
Her tone was teasing, and with the battle decided, he played into this and smiled wide.
"I was the top of my class on strategy and combat engagements. My age shouldn't have anything to do with my skill as a commander."
The woman raised an eyebrow but soon chuckled.
"Once you're older, Pup, you'll understand just how relevant age is."
He grumbled, since as much as he wanted to argue with the woman. This mission was his first chance to prove he was a competent commander in a live-fire situation. With much of his tuition paid off by his family, he was keenly aware that many wouldn't take him seriously.
"Perhaps, but I suppose time will tell..."
Suddenly, the communication officer pressed on her earpiece and called out.
"Receiving word from the boarding crew. Heavy pirate resistance, two are injured; they are being forced to retreat."
Tapping at his seat, the Falashai sighed.
"Have they disabled the pirate's FTL drive?"
After a few moments of silence, riddled only by the weak canon fire of the Lupari vessel, the woman shook her head.
"Negative. The Pirate FTL drive is still operational. Sentinel squadron is retreating, but the message is too scrambled to hear details. I'll keep trying!"
Another voice broke out as his tactical officer growled.
"Sir, energy readings on the pirate ship are fluctuating; they are attempting an emergency FTL!"
Soon the enemy vessel began glistening as its drive turned on. The Falashai was stunned for a moment yet furrowed his brow before turning his eyes to the Lupari hologram beside him.
"Charge your batteries; once our boarding crew is clear, fire on that ship!"
The Lupari seemed smug but soon quietly motioned her troops to divert power. With the Lupari ship prepared for a total bombardment, she nodded back to the Falashai and awaited the order.
"Captain! The boarding crew is clear, and they are heading back!"
The pirate vessel began flickering, and not wanting to fall short, the Falashai slammed his fist down and snarled.
"Open fire!"
Erestal canons began thumping off with high-energy fire. The unshielded pirate vessel began pulling apart, some pieces blowing off while others melted away in heated slag. As the bombardment ramped up, the Carriers' frontal glass dimmed slightly to protect the crew's eyes.
The Pirate vessel soon tore apart, ripping from the center into two shattered halves. Yet, as victory seemed assured, the frontal half glistened brighter before abruptly stretching. In a split moment, the back half of the pirate vessel detonated violently, while the front half vanished entirely.
A few seconds of stunned silence followed as Erestal blasts soared through space to hit asteroids far away. Astonishment, confusion, anger, and perplexment rose in the Falashai. Snapping his eyes to the Lupari commander's hologram, his rage-fueled faster as she frowned.
After another ten seconds of silence, the communications officer meekly spoke.
"Commander, the boarding party is aboard, but Commander Unfrim wishes to speak with you."
Yaine closed his eyes and soon shook his head. Frustrated that he let a Pirate lord slip through his fingers. While he couldn't point fingers, he desperately wanted to. Resigning further into his seat, he spoke with a sense of annoyance, rubbing his snout as he closed his eyes.
"Do we have a read on where the front half went?"
There was another pause, and his tactical officer nodded.
"Affirmative, location mapped. Without the engine drive, the pirates would have been stranded out further in the asteroid field."
The Lupari captain would smile and speak up proudly.
"We will intercept them. Ciuyuk, prepare for a jump-"
As she told her pilot to prepare, the Falashai growled and spoke quietly.
"No... We'll go after them. You've helped enough here, Captain Brishtazel. I appreciate your cooperation."
Unphased by the Falashai's naive rashness, the Lupari raised an eyebrow.
"And allow you to fall into a potential trap, Commander Yaine? We are already charging FTL; the ship half has been extrapolated within this area. We will hold charge until your ship is ready. Stars guide us."
Gritting his teeth, he motioned for his pilot to engage FTL. Just as potential coordinates flickered on his screen, Yaine hand-waved the hologram away, and he rubbed his snout in frustration as the Lupari vessel broke far enough away not to be dragged along.
Soon FTL flickered, and the Carrier lurched slightly. Consecutively, the Lupari vessel blinked away, and soon the Carrier would follow. Ease settled on the ship as the Falashai stewed, watching his crew as they busied themselves.
The communications officer spoke up again as the cruiser hummed for a few moments.
"Captain Yaine? Sentinel Squadron's Commander wishes to speak to you privately."
The Falashai fixed his shirt and nodded, motioning the communications officer to put the Commander through. After a moment, a yellow Ra'Lai with black dots stared back. The woman was quiet for a moment, glancing to the side.
"Sentinel Squadron Commander Unfrim Lu'Rim."
While the feline composed herself, the Falashai raised an eyebrow. Only after another second did she speak.
"I regret to inform you that we lost two members. Sergeant Juanli Rodriguez and Corporal Juan Rodriguez were locked off after a hull breach."
Though the Ra'Lai kept herself professional, even the Falashai could tell she was heavy-hearted. Nodding slowly, he looked down and thought for a moment.
"I apologize for your loss, Commander. Rest assured will arrest these pirates and bring them before Union space law."
The Ra'Lai nodded but winced as she averted her gaze from his.
"Of course, sir, but... I want to mount a rescue party. I believe that Sergeant Juanli Rodriguez and Corporal Juan Rodriguez could still be alive, possibly in the wreckage of the Pirate's torn half."
Yaine blinked, though he soon would take a professional approach. In typical Falashai fashion, he disregarded the Ra'Lai's feelings and sighed.
"This is not the time for personal heroics, Commander Unfrim. We are to capture and arrest the pirate vessel. I apologize for your loss. I expect a full report of the boarding mission."
Turning his attention to the crew, seeing that some had heard the Ra'Lai, he raised an eyebrow.
"Continue course."

Ah, starting to get a glimpse at what would have embittered Juanli. Nice addition to the lore.
Absolutely love where this is going! Naval battles in space are an untapped mine of potential and I can’t wait to see where you take us along to.
Im by no means an action writer, so don't expect toooooooo much XD
I Really Love Story`s like this, Honestly reminds me of an animated movie I watched a long time ago Amazingly Well Done!
My attempt at giving some form of history to Lupari commanders of old
Great story man is this a sort of prequel or back story to of mice and men or a superare thing all together?
This is not connected to Of Mice And Men. While in the UTOverse, this is around 7-8 years post invasion. And will have no main ties to Of Mice And Men, Blue On Blue, or Hearts And Minds
Oh ok nice. I ironicly was using something similar for ships cause my character Asheru is a macro in a sci-fi setting but the race is called Lyceen so it was LNC was Lyceen Naval Command. ^_^ Still looking forward to more story from you.
Oh XD
But Yee! Another part of this will be out soon. Today or tomorrow
But Yee! Another part of this will be out soon. Today or tomorrow
You have to feel bad for Juanli, she was abandoned and lost her lover, all in the name of the greater good. No wonder she went down a dark road. One can only hope she finds a little someone who can fill that big void inside her. She'll never look back, or repent, but at least give her hope to have something to look forward to.
Im assuming well its obvious that the two left behind were humans..well thats very Callous of the UTO. Also great ship combat and story.
