The sky was lacking any sort of clouds. The only thing that was hanging up there was the sun that was mercilessly heating up the water. However, a quite strong wind was also present, giving sailors some help in such unwelcoming environment.
A lone vessel was travelling throught the vast ocean. Outside of it, the world was quiet – not even bird chirping could be heard. For some, that kind of peace was really calming. For others, it could lead to madness.
The ship was kept in a good shape. The exterior – mainly in brown, red and golden colors – was kept in a good shape. The condition of its deck wasn’t worse – because of the actions of the crew, everything was sorted out.
Crew wasn’t that numerous, however. On the first glance, it certainly looked like there’s more than a dozen of them. Still, for a such big vessel like this, there should be at least two times more men. Nonetheless, they were doing well.
A shark was helping with maintaining the sail. There was an order to change the course, so they could find another ship. The crew was listening to that order and started doing their thing. After stabilizing the course, said shark leaned on the edge of the ship.
Another sailor was coming to him. He was a frog, dressed similarly to the shark. He could see the skin of the comrade in very dark green color – most likely it was because of the influence of the sun. Frog leaned on the edge as well.
”Well, kid”, frog said in snarling tone. ”You like it here?”
”It’s certainly better than being at the bottom of this ocean”, shark replied with his calm voice.
”Aye. Still, when you look at the surface, you can see some beauty.”
”I don’t know...”, young sailor squinted his eyes. ”It’s water like any other.”
”Look again.”
Shark sighed, but wasn’t protesting. He looked at the water around him. At first he was focused on just looking at it, but then, his mind started to drift off. He was thinking about the adventures that were awaiting him. Ones that he could share with fellow sailors.
”Hello?”, frog nudged his companion.
”Sorry”, embarrassed shark replied. ”I got lost in thought.”
”Exactly.”
”Huh?”
”There’s a beauty in this seemingly endless ocean”, frog started. ”For those bastards that live on the land, that’s just it – water. However, I prefer to think that it’s a mirror. The mirror that reflects our deepest desires. One thing to do in this desert.”
”But we’re on the water”, confused shark replied.
”No, kid. It’s not that different from the desert. It’s certainly better than normal one – we have ourselves and we work together to not perish on it.”
”I think I get what you mean.”
”Splendid... Care for a drink?”
”Ehm...”, shark was hesitant for a moment. ”Sure...”
Frog opened his light jacket and reached into one of his pockets. From the inner one, he took out a small bottle containing some sort of liquid. He passed it to his comrade. Sailor opened it and didn’t want to sniff it, so he just took a sip and passed it back to the owner.
”How do you find this rum?”, smiling frog asked.
”It’s quite nice, actually”, shark stated.
”Sadly, it’s a manufactured one. If you could taste homemade one... I assure you – it’s one of the best things under the sun.”
”I believe you.”
”So...”, frog turned around and leaned back. ”Are you a normal member of this crew?”
”Not really”, young sailor said in sad tone. ”I’m yet to prove my worth.”
”I’ve heard that you got captured and got into this crew after you’ve defeated three men of our’s captain team.”
”Nothing difficult – they were terrible fighters.”
”If you say so... I’m more experienced in other things.”
”I’ve heard that it’s not your first ship.”
”Yep. There were two before it – one commanded by a wolf and another by a rat. Decent fellows, but in the end, the situation concluded in the same way.”
”Yeah?”, shark looked at his comrade curiously.
”I’m really versatile”, frog started. ”At least that’s what one of my friends used to say. And that was a problem – the rest of the crew was quite jealous. They didn’t want me to become a quartermaster. So they were trying as hard as they could to be an obstacle for me. That’s why I was changing ships.”
”And you knew our captain earlier?”
”Captain Sharpscale? Only heard a thing or two about him from the friends serving under him. They’re still here, but in lesser number. Seems like someone chill.”
As a shark wanted to ask another question, he was interrupted by an announcement.
”Captain!”, crew member shouted from the highest point on the ship. ”I see a ship! It’s one with spices.”
The captain, who was a lizard with rough scales, got out from daydreaming and regained his focus. He was in a good mood, because he didn’t have to sail aimlessly now.
”Prepare, brothers!”, lizard shouted. ”We’ve found an oasis.”
Shark looked at the water again. He had the worst scenarios in his mind, but nonetheless sailor was quite optimistic. He thought about his next deeds when he looked at the surface of this dark surrounding the vessel. He then turned around and saw a scout unfurling a flag with Jolly Roger.

I wanted to write a pirate story - that kind of atmosphere has a really good vibe.
Yup, kinda like one from LotR, specifically Lothlorien.
But really, looking at the surface of water - apart from seeing your reflection - can (at least in my case) make you think about various things and water help visualize this.

It's not like you have many things to do on the ocean, so might as well talk with your fellow crewmates.
Will probably make another pirate story someday - I like this theme.
So the shark was shanghaied? It might be awkward if he has objections to acting as a pirate!
Yeah, he got captured and joined the pirate crew. He was okay with the crew, but who knows if he'll betray them? But is it worth to do so, since being a pirate is much more profitable than being in navy (in those times)?
Reminded me of
The ocean is a desert with its life underground and a perfect disguise above
The ocean is a desert with its life underground and a perfect disguise above
Beautiful sentence. There's something about the water overall that is... at least alluring.
