Hanto was excited as he entered into the carnival. The wolf hadn't had a chance to go to many since they usually didn't pop up in his town all too much. He was planning to spend all day there, he didn't know when the carnival would be back in town so he wanted to make the most of it!
He wandered around, seeing what he wanted to do first. After doing the first run-through to understand the layout of it all, he decided to start with some classic carnival games. Upon entering the area, he was immediately greeted by a chameleon woman standing behind one of the booths.
"You there! I can see that you want to play my game!" she called out to the wolf the instant their eyes made contact.
"I guess that's why I'm here." Hanto chuckled, figuring that her booth was as good as any to start! "So, what's the game?"
"The game is simple, a game of chance!" the chameleon woman responded. "What's your name wolfy?"
"Hanto." he introduced himself.
"Let's call me Lisa for the day." the chameleon nodded. "So, interested in trying it out? Of course you are!" she added on without waiting for the wolf's response.
"What's this game anyways? Other than being a luck-based one?"
"You can win some big money, that's what! First I'm going to need your wallet." Lisa instructed, holding out her hand.
"W-wallet...?" Hanto was rather taken aback by the request. "No offense but I don't know about that."
"Trust me, it'll make sense in a moment. I know you're worried so here, you can even hold my wallet to make you feel better." the chameleon reached into her own pocket and put it down on the table. "Your wallet is going to be underneath one of these cups, and if you guess right, you get to win a prize! Normally we do it with a ball but that's missing, so this is the next best thing!"
"That's great but couldn't you use your own wallet? Why do you need mine?" Hanto asked, still a bit skeptical about the whole situation.
"Because then you know that this isn't rigged at all! If it was something I had then you don't know if I'm cheatin' ya. And I know you wouldn't want that!"
"Suppose that's fair..."
"It won't even cost you anything to play, just cause I'm feeling nice!"
"Makes it harder to say no!" Hanto gave a small chuckle, deciding to go all in on it. The chameleon wouldn't be willing to put her own wallet if this was some kind of scam which put away some of the worry that Hanto was having about the whole situation. "Alright, let's do it!" Hanto said as he handed the wallet over to Lisa.
"Thank you very much sir~!" she happily took it and placed it on the table before covering it with a cup, bringing up two other ones next to it.
"Alright, if you want that prize keep your eyes on the wallet cup, otherwise you'll lose! Don't want that, we want to get you a prize to take home!" Lisa said as she began to shuffle the cups around - much quicker than Hanto anticipated. It was getting progressively harder to keep track of, and despite the wolf's best efforts the chameleon proved a bit too good at shuffling and he lost which cup held the wallet itself, so it was going to turn into a fully-fledged guessing game.
"Alright, where be your wallet? Did you lose sight of it or did you guarantee yourself a prize?" Lisa asked with a smirk.
"Let's go with..." Hanto looked at the three cups for any potential signs but ultimately saw nothing that could be helpful in guiding him to the right decision. "That one." he pointed at the one on the left.
"You sure? No going back?" Lisa asked with a smirk, hand hovering over the cup.
"Yes, I'm sure." Hanto took a deep breath and nodded.
Lisa lifted it up to reveal what looked like some kind of...small spray can?
"What's that mean...?" Hanto questioned, having originally assumed the other cups would be empty.
"That means you don't win the grand prize, but you do win a prize, in a sense anyways."
"What do you mean by that?" Hanto rose an eyebrow.
"Simple, let me give you a spritz!" she smirked as she grabbed the can and sprayed it at Hanto.
"What was that for?" Hanto coughed as he tried to swipe it away.
"It'll take you to the next step! Might not be leaving with a prize but you'll help someone else go home with one, a big ol' fluffy one judging by that fur of yours~!"
Before Hanto could question further, he suddenly felt a chill travel down his spine as his entire body began to go through a change.
For starters, it was getting harder to move his limbs properly - head included. He was able to look down and see his hands starting to enlarge while the digits merged together to become one - where they were formerly separated now simple black lines. The same change happened to his paws, with Hanto's feet becoming almost double their size as the digits were lost.
Although his fur technically stuck around, it wouldn't stay in the same way. The hair would shift, becoming softer as it changed into fabric. The fur pattern remained the same, though now instead of actual fur it had turned into faux cotton.
Hanto's tail ceased movement, nor could it move anymore as the muscles inside vanished, replaced with nothing but fluff. At the underside of the tip, a tag had even formed that showed the materials Hanto was made out of.
The wolf's eyes became unmoving, as they were no longer eyes but colored plastic ones that matched his old eye colors. Hanto's ears lose their emotive nature just like his tail, and soon Hanto's entire body became unmoving. All bone, muscles, and everything in between were gone - traded away with nothing but fluffy filling as Hanto had fully turned into a plushie version of himself.
"There we go? See? Didn't you come out cute~?" Lisa said, picking up Hanto and holding him up to the mirror.
"What the? Change me back!" Hanto tried to say, but was unable to move the stiched smile on his muzzle. Plushies couldn't talk after all! Though he at the very least was still able to properly think.
"It's a nice runner-up prize you know, now you get to bring some kid happiness if they win one of these games! And even if no one wins you then at least you made me happy~!" Lisa flicked her tail, tossing the cup that had Hanto's wallet over and grabbing it and pocketing it. "I'll see what you had later. For now let's get you all set up." she said, putting the wolf plushie among the rest of the plushies - whether or not they were normal people like Hanto once was or "proper" plushies that were always that.
"And there, now you're among friends~!" Lisa cooed with a laugh.
"Hey! What are you doing there? Who are you?" a stern voice shouted over to Lisa.
"Oops, that's my queue to go. I don't actually work here, and Lisa isn't my name. Good luck wolf boy! Hope you go to a good home and you had some goods in your wallet!" the chameleon said as she ran off from the scene.
"Hey! Get back where!' the voice shouted as he chased "Lisa" through the carnival, whether or not he ever caught her would be up for debate.
What wasn't up for debate, however, was what happened with Hanto. The only person who had known they weren't a plushie was the chameleon, and she was long gone by now - so everyone else would just assume Hanto was just like any other wolf plushie. It didn't help that he was sandwiched between a few other wolf plushies to make it even harder to distinguish him.
And he went through the steps of being a carnival prize. Some had eyed him but just couldn't win the game to win the prize plushie for a while. He almost made it through the whole carnival without being won, but eventually, that streak was ended when a child had wound up succeeding in the game and claiming Hanto as his prize.
He took the plushie home and despite being stuck as a plushie at least the child had taken good care of him, playing with Hanto and taking him wherever he went to bring him comfort. He could at least take solace in the fact he was helping his new owner despite being stuck in a plushie form for the foreseeable future! Perhaps one day he would be let free of his plushie form if someone was ever able to hear him - he wasn't fully inanimate after all, but until then, he'd be a child's plushie in his room among his other collection of stuffed animals!
