Hanto was walking through the swap meet that was in town. It was a weekly event happening every Saturday where vendors from all over the local area could come and set up a sales booth. There were some people selling food, some old electronics, and some selling arts and crafts. The wolf enjoyed coming every now and again when he had the time to see what the locals were selling and what new vendors would be making an appearance.
He continued to wander, eventually coming across a booth that was dedicated to selling an energy bar. There was a large case with multiple inside, no it appeared as though no one had purchased them. Curious, Hanto went over to the booth to see what it was about.
"Hello, welcome!" the doe woman running the booth quickly greeted the wolf as she stood up.
"Hey, noticed you're selling these bars, what are they exactly?"
"The world's finest energy bars! All natural, made by the hands of these delicate fingers." she raised up her hands and offered a small giggle.
"Oh, you made these? So you must be Eliza then?" he questioned, looking at the wrapper that said "Eliza Energy."
"The very same!" she said with a nod. "But I must confess they aren't selling all too well. But I know they will once enough word of mouth gets out!" Eliza said proudly.
"I'm sure that'll come!" Hanto reassured her. "How much do these cost?"
"$5 a bar! A little pricey but trust me they will give you energy like never before!" Eliza responded.
"Alright, let's try it out, see what it's all about!" Hanto said, reaching into his wallet and handing the five dollars over to the doe.
"Thanks, and here you go!" she said, reaching into the case and pulling out a bar from Hanto while she put the money into her purse.
"And thank you!" Hanto smiled as he accepted the energy bar she held out for him to take. He wasted no time in unwrapping it and beginning to eat it. It tasted pretty good! It was far from anything groundbreaking, but from being homemade it was better than a lot of bars he had eaten before!
"So...what do you think?" Eliza asked hopefully.
"I like it! It's got a nice kick to it." the wolf nodded as he finished up the bar. "A lot better than other energy bars I've had, I'll give it that!"
"Great!" she smiled and put her hands together. "That means you'll be perfect!"
"Perfect for...what, exactly?" Hanto wasn't following what the doe was saying.
"Being a brand ambassador! Like I said, the biggest hurdle is getting the word out, and if you like the product like you say you do then you shouldn't have any problems getting people to buy some!"
"Oh, no, I don't think that's a good idea." Hanto shook his head. "I'm not really the kind of guy who can do something like that, but I appreciate the offer!"
"No, I insist! You'd be perfect for it!" Eliza said. "It's easy work I assure you! All you need to do is just stand there and bring eyes into the booth!"
Hanto sighed, having a feeling that the doe didn't want to take no for an answer. She was nice, so he would extend the favor. "Alright, I'll do it but just for this day!"
"So long as we sell out of these energy bars by the end of the day I'll be happy with that!" the doe smiled, closing her eyes as a strange energy was starting to emit from between her short antlers. "Just stay still okay, it'll feel less weird that way!"
"W-what's that supposed to mean? What would feel weird?" Hanto questioned but got his answer when he began to feel a strange sensation travel all throughout his body.
It felt as though his body was getting lighter, the weight of bones and muscles vanishing. He felt his tail growing out, thinning drastically as all the fur was vanishing on it. Instead of the skin underneath it being revealed, it was a white color that was made out of cardboard, the base of it flat and the entire shape of the former tail now a triangle thick enough to support Hanto's changing form.
This same shrinking of width was starting to affect every other part of Hanto. His back was becoming completely flat, with the same happening to his front. Just like his tail, the skin and fur was becoming paint on cardboard. His form was being forced into a permanent position. Hanto's muzzle formed a big smile while one of his hands went into a fist giving a thumbs up while the other hand went onto his hip.
One in position, the cardboard was quick to take over. The coloration of his body lost any trace of shading from the light, now completely flat-colored paint. His clothes had become a part of his body now, nothing underneath the clothes that was just paint now. Despite becoming two-dimensional, his full body was still inside the cardboard. Rather than standing normally, he was now locked into a pose that would be a welcoming invite to all those who saw him.
The last bit to go was Hanto's eyes, looking around before they too became simple paint on the cardboard. All of the volume on the wolf was gone, now a wolf standee.
One extra piece of cardboard formed out closer to his mouth, a white piece of cardboard that was a speech bubble where text began to form. It read "Eliza's Energy Bars Are Electrifying! Try one today!"
With that, the transformation came to a close. Despite being turned into an object, he was still fully aware of his surroundings. He could hear and see, but was unable to speak, lacking the ability to do so since his lungs and throat didn't exist anymore, they were converted into cardboard like the rest of his body.
Once the transformation ended, a breeze blew through, causing the new standee to fall flat on its face. Luckily, it didn't hurt as Hanto could still feel, but it really sold home that his body was literally as light as cardboard now, a harsh breeze could be enough to send him flying.
"Hey, watch out!" Eliza said, bending down and picking Hanto back up, dusting the dirt off of the new standee. "You're going to get dirty if you put your face down into the asphalt!" she said, practically scolding him despite it being out of his control.
"Okay, so you're going to have to attract customers to sell the bars! Should be a piece of cake, the product is good and you make a cute mascot! I would normally use myself because I made it, but if I made myself a standee then who you be the one to sell the energy bars? I have to make sure no one steals my inventory!" she said as she move Hanto over so that he stood next to the bar.
"Hopefully we can sell these bars quickly so we can get you out of that standee form. I have to admit I'm not super experienced with this kind of transformation magic, I just saw how to do this on the internet by another deer whose apparently a witch. Good makeup tutorials too..." she trailed off and shaking her head. "That's beside the point! What I mean is that you're going to be stuck like that until all the energy bars get sold! I wanted to just make it temporary but I just don't know how to do that, I only know how to link it with something else and this is what I thought up! Hopefully you're not too mad but judging by your face you look pretty happy with everything! You're going to attract a ton of customers I just know it!"
The doe went back to her post, waiting for the customers to start rolling in. Unfortunately for both her and Hanto's ability to transform back to normal, the advertising only sold a few extra bars when she had fifty to go through. Despite this, it seemed like Eliza was in good spirits!
"Wow, you really did help! That's the best day I've ever had here! Normally I only sell two or three but we got to sell ten today! We're almost through them all! I know I said it'd only be for today but I thought maybe with you next to them they'd sell better, and they did! I'm sure next time we'll be able to get all of the remaining bars into the hands of customers looking for a boost of energy!" she beamed. "Don't worry though, I'll take good care of you so you don't get ruined or torn up or anything! You'll be as pristine as you are now! I don't know what happens if a part of you breaks and I don't think either of us wants to find out!" she giggled.
Unfortunately for Hanto, most of his time was in the closet collecting dust. Eliza was new to the swap meet, so she couldn't get there every weekend. New vendors only got slots once a month and after a year or if they got enough traction they would be given more slot availabilities. The trend of Eliza selling more than usual stuck when she brought out Hanto, though the days she forgot him in the closet would be the days she sold little to none.
At the very least for Hanto, Eliza kept her word. Anytime she brought Hanto out of the closet she would make sure he was all cleaned up and nice-looking. It was the least she could do after getting Hanto roped into the whole situation! She couldn't turn him back, the spell she used wasn't the weakest one and the antlers made it much stronger by mistake. As such, the only way that Hanto would be able to turn back to his usual self would be for Eliza to sell all the energy bars. The idea never crossed to sell outside the swap meet, and she wasn't sure if the magic made it so she had to sell them there if she wanted to reverse the spell, so she veered on the side of caution.
For Hanto, it was a very boring experience. His sense of time was becoming blurred, there wasn't much ways to tell how much time had passed stored in a closet after all! At the very least, losing track of time made the days blend together better, meaning he didn't have much of a reason to care how much time had passed. He knew that he would eventually return to normal, and did enjoy the times he was taken out and brought to the swap meet and set up. The sun still felt nice on his cardboard body despite everything.
Eliza seemed apologetic about the whole situation, but her enthusiasm for each sell did feel endearing, making it easier to tolerate the whole process. She was just a doe trying to get her dream off the ground, and she did miscalculate just how long it would take to sell the bars she had.
But each day she was able to sell a little bit more, and the light at the end of the tunnel of Hanto's cardboard fate was starting to become closer to a reality. However, it would still take a few more slots in the swap meet, and a break period during December for the holidays would make the process even slower, but it was almost done! Once Eliza sold off all of her energy bars, the transformation Hanto was experiencing would come to a close. But until then, he would remain a piece of cardboard stored in Eliza's closet, taken out briefly when it came time to set up shop. Eventually he would return to normal, but for now, he was a standee version of himself for the foreseeable future!
