OOOOPS: All Entrails breakfast cereal. The flavor of Captain Crunch nobody expected!
Not just hitting the goal, overshooting the goal by a landslide!
Thank you;
Now i am having the "this is fine" meme of the dog in the burning house in my head.

Nah he hit the goal, but he kicked the ball through the back of the net
Neat put. Have a imaginary thumb up for this reply by a stranger from the internet.

But I'm sure it'll deter other would-be-thieves for a little while.
I adore how this page looks
But also oh my gosh. I guess the hazards of being so big huh.
But also oh my gosh. I guess the hazards of being so big huh.
A blunt knife is still a knife unfortunately. And sometimes they cut you worse
He cut his arm off how do you do that with a blunt knife? You know what I don't want to know
Big Blunt knife with a lot of momentum. Is still at the end of the day, a knife. And humans are squishy
Rookie cop has a negligent discharge of his stabber on the first day?
Considering the state of the world and how much crime is going on... i dont think hes going to be reprimanded by the house... his psychology and fellow noodle compatriots however...
Oh yeah, boy's gonna need some serious therapy, and this was already a punishment assignment so it looks like he's in for a rough time.
Just wait until he looks at his crush and sees horror in her eyes. Forget therapy, give this lad some hard drugs. He'll need 'em.
From what I remember, their species used to be blood thirsty and terrifying in combat due to those claws. That's why they are used as guards, but their culture has evolved to be pacifists and any form of aggression is met harshly with punishment. Mainly because they don't want to regress to primal instincts. Unless I'm wrong... but yeah... I think he's in for a rough time, but I think the shop keep will forgive him (I hope).
Not fury. Going by the internal "instructions" we can see here he miscalculated the speed of his turn and by the time he realized his mistake momentum had already turned what he planned to be a relatively gentle stop into a killing blow.
thats still not fury
I'm pretty sure that means anger, and I don't think there's even an ounce of anger in this noodly worm boy's body
I'm pretty sure that means anger, and I don't think there's even an ounce of anger in this noodly worm boy's body
that directly contradicts his thoughts which we're shown *as* the event happens, and what we're being shown here is one of the reasons *why* members of his species have to take extreme care with their actions, because their "hands" are literally giant clumsy weapons
It was clearly a mistake. He didn't react out of anger. He was actually trying to be careful.
Because he's large and powerful. Being delicate isn't exactly the easiest thing for him.
not in a comic with an author trying to tell a specific story they can't, unless you're saying you think we can't trust Valsalia's writing in their own story
So, you're not satisfied with just being wrong and unable to admit it, you have to be a jerk, too. Cool.
Bold of you to assume you're a better writer. or that your level of media literacy is somehow superior to mine. You may or may not be, but you've nothing to base that on, and it doesn't really have anything to do with this.
And you're one of those cowards that snipes and blocks people, too. You're a real arrogant piece of work, aren't you?
And you're one of those cowards that snipes and blocks people, too. You're a real arrogant piece of work, aren't you?
Guess you decided you were wrong after all. Was this all really worth it?
Pretty sure that weirdo came in here with intent to troll to begin with. I mean, just look at that cringy internet tough guy message on their account page. Block and move on.
Yeah, he's a troll. He obviously thinks a lot of himself and that he's edgy. I'm well acquainted with immature knuckleheads like him here. He sent me three amusing notes that were particularly lame attempts at insults, as well as posting the reply above. It's rather amusing taking up so much real estate in someone's head.
I don't block people, but if I did he'd be a perfect choice.

This is an individual who got into this position in the first place by using excessive volume by accident.
Yes the reverse, Reverse, REVERSE makes it obvious that he miscalculated the speed and was unable to correct.
An lack of fighting experience might well add to this error, he had to be fast and fast heavy things are dangerous.

The Baxxid have gone a long way towards overcoming their innately violent natures and have built a society that emphasizes peace and non violence. Which ironically means Kalguer hasn't ever had to preform under stress like this. Certainly not as a guardsman. He's not "enraged," he's excited and nervous. He wants to do well. But he has also never done this before, and his oh so logical and precise brain is defaulting to its baseline programming. At his core, evolution has made him an ambush predator armed with and abundance of fast twitch muscle and lightning reflexes. Without any real training, the adrenaline dump has triggered the sort of strike response his ancestors would have used to attack their prey. He's moving much faster and with far more force than he intended. Kal likely struck the thief almost faster that the human eye could follow with a bone claw weighing at least 100 lbs backed up by a muscular central trunk that is probably 800 lbs or more. That bone claw likely struck the thief at more than 100 miles per hour, which would have hit him with something like 16 tons of force.
Given Baxxid psychology with regards to violence, this is very, very bad.
whelp, I guess that's the end of that lil romance
oh well, I guess he's got a long future as a cop ahead of him now
oh well, I guess he's got a long future as a cop ahead of him now
Gawdammit. Kal is gonna have a lot of fun dealing with this. All aboard the PTSD train.
Quite possibly both. If anyone's going to be sympathetic to him it'll be her.
This situation could have a profound effect on the number of occurrences of petty theft in Val Salia
Probably not. I doubt this is the first petty thief that's been killed by a guard, and even though it's a better place to live than most of the world, it's been shown that poverty is still rampant. Potential consequences rarely ever stop people from committing crimes.
True.
It's been proven that if capital punishment applied to more crimes, criminals get more violent as a result of wanting to get "their money's worth".
If you're going to get executed for stealing, you might as well add murder to the charges to make your execution worth it.

Wasn't able to find the exact study, but here's a compilation of data between 1990 and 2019. States with the death penalty have a higher homicide rate than those without the death penalty, with a breakdown by state shown via graphs.
If removing the death penalty lowers violent crime rates, then adding the death penalty to more crimes will surely increase the number of violent crimes.

Aw jeez, thought Snatcher's belt was just being torn off, then I saw Man's Second-Best Friend floating away to the left.
On the... Well, other hand, I suppose this would lead to a reduction in future theft.

Gotta hand it to ya. This is a strong start for the new year. :D
Now the question is:
-is this what happened
-Or, is this what he think is going to happen from his internal prediction

Oh, oh that's really not good. You are entirely too effective at handing out emotional whiplash like this.
Then kalgkur looks into the camera and says "hhhhhhhhhIIiii aaaam theeee law!"
Ooooohhhhh expletives deleted. Been wonderful knowing you Kalgkur. Even if circumstance or the law of the land doesn't bring about harsh punishments just the sheer act of such bloodshed will follow the young Baxxid for the rest of his days.
Jesus fuck. Though Valsalia seemed like a place where thives get their hands cut off or get hard labor.
Also is it supposed to be left claw that he's talking about when it's his own right handed claw that appears to be the origin of movement?

Well if rando thug survives, I would say losing a hand and nearly having your intestines ripped out is definitely punishment enough
He knew he needed to reverse the momentum of that claw. He knew it. He told himself to do it.
...And he didn't. That desire to punish the <DESPISED LIFE-ERROR> that dared to harm/anger the girl he loves was too much.
He is NOT gonna be okay with himself for some time. Poor guy...

Nah, this wasn't a case of anger.
The key is the line just before he tries to stop.
"Body-stalk rotation early complete".
This is the point where he realizes that he turned faster than he intended and that the movement he has initiated is now extremely dangerous. From here on he tries to stop but can't.

It feels more like he didn't actually try to reverse the momentum. Like, he noted the early completion, but he didn't think anything like "Unable to reverse momentum" or "Attempt to reverse momentum failing", it sounds to me like he's trying to prompt himself to do it and just... didn't. Like, "Okay, push the button. C'mon, push the button, you gotta do it. Why aren't you pushing the button, me? You need to, just do it!"
But maybe we'll see more of his thought process next page. I'm mostly curious how it will match with my own character, who killed a foe because they wouldn't surrender and she couldn't stop him in time any other way. It was pretty psychologically scarring for her, since she's a "Living Construct" and was raised on the idea that her entire reason to exist was to Serve Humans, and since arriving on Earth she's ended up the local superhero/cryptid. (She's now in therapy! But can't tell her therapist that she's actually "The Superbunny". Or that she's a non-human creation of magic from the parallel world of Terra. So sometimes sessions get awkward.) ^_^

Phew thank Kalgkur for getting rid of those nasty stomach worms, I'm sure he'll feel so much better now!
I'm guessing that'll put a bit of a damper on his blossoming romance with the smith...
It was his first attempt at preparing noodles with tomato sauce. A bit vigorously stirred, but overall you can really feel the passion this chef had in his dish.
‘Tis but a scratch.”
A scratch? Your arm’s off.
No, it isn’t.
Well, what’s that then?”
I’ve had worse.
You’re a liar.
Come on you pansy!

I guess that's the problem with mantis hands; they don't make good nightsticks.
Theft does not deserve a death sentence. This will not be good for his romance life.
Its easy to forget that while Baxxid are very pacifistic usually they are very very powerful
Considering this guy was likely a serial thief and this was an accident the consequences wont be too drastic hopefully.
its pretty likely at minimum he's going to lose his job, but if she isn't to horrified by what happened I can see her offering him a job as her personal guard(and after a display like above people are likely going to be a lot less eager to rob her if a certain someone is nearby, plus with a competent guard she can go back to making the expensive pieces)

"Likely" isn't a reason to rip someone's guts out while simultaneously dismembering them, nor is "thief", serial or not. Though fortunately for our Baxxid friend, Val Salia does seem like a place where murder under the aegis of authority isn't harshly punished unless it directly embarrasses the city's elite or reputation.
As for not being horrified by seeing a man violently torn apart in front of her, how couldn't she be? Would you really want her to not be? Yes, maybe she'll be overcome by lust and desire at the sight of a steaming loop of intestine on her crush's massive murder-talon.
...Are people here seriously just acting like this is a playful oopsie on the course of their budding, sure-to-go-well relationship?
Assuming, of course, this isn't the stereotypical Dream Sequence or related trope. I'd be a bit disappointed if it was, but less so than the degree to which I find this whole turn to be jarring and unpleasant.
I trust Val's storytelling abilities of course. I'm sure there's some sort of meaningful point to this.

It was pretty sudden and violent. No doubt she'll be horrified. She has no way of knowing that it was unintentional yet.
Kal is going to be mortified and traumatized. He's probably going to be embarrassed and assume she won't want anything to do with him anymore, but she HAS seen his sensitive and thoughtful side. It will be interesting to see how Val deals with their next few moments and further interactions.

What actually happened? It hard to tell but the direction those intestines are moving suggests the claw should be in front of, not behind, the thief.
from the position of the claw and how the "guts" are drawn, that could actually be the sculpture breaking
I was thinking that. Not that that part matters as much, since...the thief's arm is off. Which tells us the amount of force/slashy side that is happening.
I think the thief has been bisected and the talon is covering the, uh... "gap."
I was thinking that, but given that the gore is exploding outwards, in front of the thief, the claw should still be in front of him.
I remember seeing on a previous page somewhere (can't remember which one unfortunately) that a baxxid brain is basically where the left analytical side is hyper over-developed, while the right is under-developed. If that relates to movement, he can calculate how he would move all he wants, but if he moved in such a way that was wholly unfamiliar and foreign to him, there would be some conflict on what he wants to happen, vs what actually would happen. While this is all just guesswork, I would imagine that the guard-master baxxid (Shtivv'kr was his name I believe) normally trains official recruits on how to balance out such motions and avoid such things from happening.
Dude has to be desperate or absolutely dumb to pull that off in front of a guard. But interesting way to show the thought process of a martial move set. As a student of the arts I like this
This thief stole in front of a Baxxid with a red cloth that flag him as a cop. This was not a smart thief. Also, I bet that his lack of hunting and combat experience is the main reason why he fail to hit only in front of him.
I'm more amazed how this was done when we know those claws have been DULLED for safety.
That's what he said!
(Or would have if his lungs were still inside him)
(Or would have if his lungs were still inside him)
Then you will personally be volunteering to clean up the piles of corpses from the desperate and starving?
Val Salia isn't quite advanced enough to NOT have plenty of those.

That's precisely what 'Community Service' for those tried and found guilty of minor crimes are supposed to do!

I know these critters are evolved for digging, but fighting is an entirely different set of reflexes and emotions. These critters can think faster than they can react-- for good and for ill. And their reflexes are VERY fast for their mass.
How much of this is instinct and how much is having trouble controlling his own mass? Either way... He's technically a guard. And he is going to have one HELL of a time healing from this.
Not the thief, I am pretty sure he's fucked.

They are adapted to apply violence with their claws, but in a very precise and lethal manner. In the wild they'd hunt by burying themselves under the surface and then impaling anything unfortunate enough to walk over them on their claws. This, of course, is not the optimal strategy for nonlethally apprehending a criminal. Can baxxids move particularly fast over land? It seems like it'd hamper their ability to guard anything if the can't catch a criminal who just books it in the opposite direction.

I'd say he resolved the situation quite handily.
FATALITY
But for real. "Ah there's a large, lethal looking critter guarding this shop. Let me commit larceny right in front of it! What could possibly go wrong?"

But....most importantly...was the art piece damaged?
That would be a shame. =^.^=
That would be a shame. =^.^=
Considering that, at least by the drawings, those claws don't look all that sharp, to do that kind of damage Kal would have had to swing that thing FAST, and it would have to be incredibly dense. To sever the forearm and pop the guts without a pinch point, I'd imagine that claw would have seriously cracked a building with that hit.
Edit after a thought: Guy's body is also probably going to end up like three intersections down before it stops.
Edit after a thought: Guy's body is also probably going to end up like three intersections down before it stops.
Baxxid evolved as ambush predators, so they would move FAST when striking. Like, nearly faster than the human eye could follow fast. Just swagging it, but figure Kal's claw hit at about 100 miles per hour, and his individual claws weigh about 100 pounds each, Snatchy McGrabbyhands got hit with aboit 16 tons of force.
Indeed, it doesn't have to be sharp to be devastating with enough kinetic force applied behind it. Just look at what a mere slab of unsharpened, bevelled steel can do to a B-52 bomber in the link below. I have actually witnessed this happen with a photography class I was in many years ago. The ground literally shakes with the impact as the steel comes down on the bomber fuselage like a thunderbolt, cutting through it like a hot knife through butter. While not on the same scale, such a claw blow would be equally as devastating on a relatively fragile Human body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GPsOuXImL0
Oh no, indeed.
It's so embarrassing when you do your duty so well, you end up splattering half the marketplace in your overperformance...
That impression will stay with Nell for a long, long time; Kalgkur will never live it down, socially or internally.
Supremely powerful writing and presentation on your part.
That poor pilfering bastard... A genius way of making such gory image tasteful, though.
Love the Downey Jr. Holmes slow-mo analytical narration for those deadly baxxid moves!

And here I thought the worst consequences for this little rendezvous would be his superior telling him off for getting distracted during his shift
Probably eager to get home and get nose deep in her checked out books! :D
Seems that the exert authority command was a bit more amplified than the others, and this is probably what it would be like if construction equipment was given the delicate job of policing.
Like getting a Heimlich maneuver from a runaway NASCAR vehicle
if that's not an imagine spot we need to get these guys some nerf liners....
"Hey these giant slug dudes are pacfists, nothing will EVER happen to me if I steal right in front of one of them!"

It's okay, that thief violated the NAP, clearly this was castle doctrine at work.
Good job, officer!
Good job, officer!
This guy just can't catch a break. He meets someone who really likes him, and now he's accidentally killed a man right in front of her
Ah, the Superman problem: When you're surrounded by things you can accidentally tear apart like they were tissue paper, if you lose control for a second.
Guy just got murdered on accident.
Every OoPs fan rushing to Kalgur's side "oh honey, are you okay? that must have been so scary for you!!"
I absolutely love it.
I too want to hug the poor clumsy boneworm.
Kinda worried about the social consequences of death by baxxid, even if it was on guard duty and is entirely forgiven, I doubt any mothers will want their children swinging on claws any time soon.

Only seen a few other peeps say this, so I'll toos my bit onto the rather tiny pile:
That man tried to rob a precious metal display shop *right in front of a guard*
While wearing cheap robes and apparently not specing high into Sneak and Enchanting.
That was dumb on so, so many levels.
Different thing to think about:
Can anyone imagine how fast this played out for the smith?
By the panels, it's more broken down step by step. And even then e get that shocked train of thought from big boy that even he realized he had moved way too fast...too late.
From her perspective cutting off midword, it was barely a blink of an eye before her statue was no longer being stolen.
And it got a coat of paint.

It was mentioned that she's not using precious metals.
Indeed, the not-so-precious metals type, but even then, she still had her trinket stolen after all she's been through.
Look like kal have the same dark panel moment but dark instead of red...did he have a impulse deep inside him. Look like he Can go almost feral.
He look off.
He look off.
And to think he was aghast at his compatriot having non-blunted arm blades. Seems blunting them does pretty much zip to render them non-lethal. XP
Indeed, with enough kinetic force put behind them, it really wouldn't matter at all.
wow those Baxxid things are deceptively strong, seems like he almost cut him in half without even trying. and the claws are filed down right? as far as the theif, FAFO and all that, hope the vendor can cover for him at least a little bit.
UHM that escalated quickly! This can not end well
"I told you to just discourge the thieves!"
"He looks pretty discouraged to me."
"He looks pretty discouraged to me."
OOOOOOHHHHH...gotta HAND it to him...I knew he had the guts to be a guard but the other guy couldn't STOMACH this one. Liver let die he didn't have the heart to pay for the lady's wares...
My (friendly) macro character Sylia would sympathize with Kal's problem here - learning fine control of a big body is not an easy task. I don't think Kal's own people are going to be quite so understanding, since he just smashed a shoplifter into red mist. Nominate the dumbass that did that in front of a Baxxid for a Darwin Award, but man, oh, man, Kal isn't coming out of this unscathed either.
Ah, the train of thought when you realize that in about five seconds, you're about to do something that could ruin everything, and you CAN'T STOP.
As I remember, baxxids in wildlife prefer to sit in ambush and wait for the victim, so if the rookie fast enough, can he run away from Kal?
Well, this one wasn't fast so he can't run even from the claw, but theoretically? How many muscles in their tail body?

No... Not like this... =(
I'm honestly surprised the act of turning around could be so dangerous. I hope they take that into account and go easy on him...

That's gonna leave a mark. All the way down the alley.
Seriously though, this is some legitimately grim writing. You just created a tragic monster. Well... another tragic monster.

Wow, he hit the thief so hard in the back, all the necklaces he stole are flying out of his pockets!
And also he spilled his drink! Yeah, that's it!
And also he spilled his drink! Yeah, that's it!
I "was" going to say something similar but then I noticed the severed hand flying off into the distance and thought: Yeah, even I can't throw enough glitter on the situation to make "that" not look like someone's just got severely injured. xD
oooh 😮 of course! How could I not see something so obvious! What a relief. And here I was worrying about nothing. 😋

Very Good Comic i really Enjoy it!

It's a shame Skyrim is in a different universe. I get the impression nobody would even blink if this happened there.
Ooh dear this go wont go well for our lovable baxxids mental health.
Good news this will heavily discourage theft in the future
Good news this will heavily discourage theft in the future
Or the thief was illiterate and couldn't read the notice saying a wormlizardbug with a scrap of red cloth on one of its spikes means its an enforcer of city law.
that's gonna leave a mark. All over the walls, the floor, the stalls, the merchandise... the poor baxxid's scarred soul...
And here we see how another one of misfits gets to join the Kassen outcast gang
why would anyone steal near a baxxid guard? i mean it could only be like stealing something in front of the royal British guard they will shoot you very very politely and apologize profusely after you are swiss cheese.
sir please stop you really should choose a better path in life ... bang ... oh gosh im incredibly sorry sir ...................... british.exe timeout: error did not receive apologetic response from apology target -> run howRude.exe

Well, at least he's making a statement to all the future wannabe thieves. By accident, but still. The prospect of being gutted like a fish may dissuade at least some of them.
Ah! Well...ummm...ahhh....I mean he stopped the guy. And clearly didn't /want/ to smack that sharply or hard. I just hope he can get the support he needs to not let this rule his life. Noodle lad deserves good things. I just hope Nell is...not scared off by this D:
I don't know if therapists exist in Val Salia, but they certainly should for moments like this.
I don't think it would be like a profession per say but Im sure there are humans around who could try to help our bug work through this slowly. Hopefully D:
It's like the old saying goes: "What is little to one, is explosively hemorrhaging for another"
"To shreds, you say? Tsk tsk tsk. How's his wife holding up?"
And it may seem silly to steal in front of a baxxid guard, but the guy may not have known that red bandana means guard, or have even seen a baxxid before. Not that it excuses his behavior, of course. He just might be new. Well, might have been new. :3

Ah, the ambush predator instincts.
Just a quick lethal thrust. So easy. So fast. So much faster than even a big brain boy's thoughts.

Please add me to the "On NO" contingent, with a side of "Poor Kalgkur".
Positive note: Don't think anyone will be trying to steal from there anytime soon.
…I don’t think he reversed.
(Also I love seeing his thought processes like that)

Now thats a big oops. And thaaaaats why I am not touching small creatures. I am not afraid of them, I am afraid of harming them.
At the very least word will get out and no one will dare steal from her again for quite a while.
And now for the true test as to whether their relationship is written in the stars or dead on arrival; will she look at him with fear of him or concern for him after he has just taken a life?
Well that went from heartwarming to heart-wrenching fast
Greetings, fellow OOPs fans! I'm here to remind you once again that there's a place called "Top Web Comics" https://www.topwebcomics.com/?home=3 that compiles comics from various places. There's a bunch of cool stuff there. They have monthly votes, so you can support OOPs there. You can vote once a day per device, so your PC, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.
I've noticed that you can sometimes even get in extra votes from different IP addresses, or if you're disconnected from your IP and open up again later.
My internet's been out, so I didn't catch the final figures for last month. It's currently at 337 votes and 93rd place. The highest it's reached is 36th place, and the top vote getters seem to end up with something close to 20,000 votes.
Vote early, vote often! Help OOPs get noticed!

I noticed OOPs has been slipping and is, as said, in the 90s. It is important we keep it on the first page, as most people probably don’t go to the second page.
Yep. I've personally been slacking lately due to internet and truck issues.
Internet I can see, but truck???
I am still bound to my retirement home, using a walker. Hopefully I will have my restrictions lifted on Thursday but it will be awhile before I can walk to the library again.

In the course of many of my days I have the opportunity to vote from different locations.
I noticed I can often vote twice with my iPhone if I am on another floor.
You're probably on a different address then.
Yyyyyup!
You've been waiting for this moment for so long!

A. He's a guard...be there's a reason his species is USED for guard work.
B. If one is so brazen to steal valuables in front of a guard, there will be punishment
C. He's also newbie in this. So probably hasn't had the combat training to strike a fleshy human just right.

Considering that someone could be so stupid as to steal in front of baxid guard this can be only classified as suicide.
Oh well, at least nobody going to try stealin around the maket after show like that.

Baxxids are known to be harmless. House Ivenmoth makes a point of ensuring everyone knows that, even. Poor bastard probably figured "eh, it's just another big nerd" and didn't consider that a baxxid would be capable of turning him into an abstract painting by complete accident.
Kal: I want to block the thief without harming him.
DM: roll
Kal: Shit, rolled a one.
DM: critical fumble, you actually strike the thief. Roll to hit.
Kal: Natural 20. Dammit!
DM: well, that's a critical hit. No need to roll damage. He's first level, so your bonuses alone finish him off. "Kal, you misjudge how fast the thief is moving and accidentally slam your left claw into him with the force of a charging rhino. His arm is torn off and his internal organs spill onto the ground as you basically cut him in half."

Oh dear... even if the official guards approved of swift judgement, I guess he'd be very... -very- severely punished by the other baxxid... *edge of seat intensifies*
That stall sure could use a glass wall or something to deter this sort of hands-on stupidity. But I suppose that much glass would also be quite expensive.
Maybe… bolt the products to the table? Oh right, no manufacturing… bolts and screws might be on short supply… 🤔

The level of find out for this fuck around is off by a small factor. Also, this guy just found out he is not the main character of this story.
You know it shows what a great comic this is that I'm now super-devastated for Kalgkur
Down below somebody deleted their comments on how he acted in rage, and the comic clearly denotes him having a severe moment of violence
To explain, the 2nd panel before the inner monologue is the world "Going mute" as what happens in times of extreme emotional stress and disconnect as your body reacts on emotions and you become a passenger to your own actions and rage. It happens when people see their loved ones attack where they become brutalistic to later recount the violence as "It felt like I was not in control" etc
This is what was happening in the comic, while he is logically issuing out statements, he just saw his loved one get robbed in front of him and he became a passenger to his own actions, his logical mind is crying out for him to stop but his body fueled by emotions refuses to let go of the wheel, then there's one less thief in the world
So yeah, according to what I saw was him entirely fueled by inner rage as his rational mind was crying out again and again for him to stop

Went back to double check the prior pages about him talking with another Baxxid who clearly enjoyed the love of exploring their basic instincts, read some of the lore pages where they are trying to "Rise above" their natural urges and tendencies towards violence and them developing into an intellectual species is very new and alien to them (To quote the comic page it's only been 115 years)
Basically, think of Baxxid like Romulans and Vulcan's, while they're currently in that in between area in terms of history plus projection

That actually sounds possible, except that his inner monologue was showing him thinking about his actions and being entirely logical. I suspect that he was just big and clumsy.
I guess we'll see soon.

Oh no! That better be a mental thing like "What if I hurt them" type thing, their claws are blunted!
When the claws are the size of what these creatures have even blunted claws can decapitate someone.
Oh noooo, he accidentally cut the bag of spaghetti noodles and tomato sauce that the thief previously stole from the bar
What an embarrassing and entirely harmless mess this is

Progenitor, just killed a man
Put a claw against his back, moved my stalk too fast, now he's gone splat

Wow that is some serious force behind the stab-pendage.
And he's not even striking. Just brushing against him with the back of his claw. Almost like the white glove face slap, before a cliche flintlock pistol duel.
But here the glove slap makes all the guts fall out. Damn. Poor guy. Both of 'em.

Panel 3: This mustn't register on an emotional level.
The most hilarious thing to me is before how everyone couldn't stop talking about how so damn wholesome his converstaion with Nell is going. Meanwhile, I was following along like, "Mmhm. Yep. Uh-huh. Shouldn't he be gaurding?" What's the worst that can happen? He falls in love and maybe reprimanded for a few places getting robbed behind his back? Nah.
I think this is the second time a sudden moment of violent skewing has occurred in the comic (the first being Brakka stabbing Elim in the back), and yet I didn't find it as jarring despite being way more gruesome. If it was actually drawn out, for sure, but the silhouettes detail just as much.
I can't imagine Kalgkur will get into too much trouble for this. They'd likely see it as him taking matters into his own hands (which wasn't what he was advised to do) and, due to lack of training, accidentally killed the guy; so basically what it is. Either way, he delt with the situation just unconventionally.

Kal did that by accident, that much I accept, but with criminals and even petty thieves, you can only f*ck around so much before you find out the consequences of your actions. I just hope things turn out alright for our bone-worm boy.
Yeah, I doubt that the official consequences from this will be all that harsh. The one who's going to be really hard on Kalgkur is going to be Kalgkur himself. Much like several other prominent characters in the comic, I can easily see him becoming his own worst enemy from the trauma - particularly because baxxid have very carefully built their pacifist culture and reputation. He's not likely to get much support from other baxxid, and the humans will be wary of him.
It'll be interesting to see where Val goes with this, to say the least.

Well would you look at that. Here I was just thinking things were going entirely too well and couldn't possibly last and there you go.
Val seems to be one of those authors that delights in lulling his characters into a false sense of security only to violently rip the rug out from underneath them.
Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but it sure makes it easy to tell when a major plot point is coming up. XD

We're gonna get Ol' Switcheroo'd. He didn't actually hit the guy, he's imagining the worst case scenario, probably gonna end up with the guy getting away. The last 2 panels are all in "Braxxid brain space"-style after all
That moment when you find out that Isaac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-bitch not just in space, but in multiple universes.
Inertia is an unforgiving, stone-cold bitch sometimes. Usually right when things are going so very well, too. And now Kalgkur is going to be dealing with this one for a very long time. Hopefully he doesn't decide to go Galen's route... does biteleaf even affect Baxxid?

I am curious, is this a situation of 'training versus instinct' in what is happening? Or well, has happened in the end.
I was not expecing a Mortal Kombat fatality from this comic
If a Baxxid can do that kind of damage with dull claws and without meaning to, just imagine what a Baxxid with sharp claws and killing intent could do...
Oh, so they're built like those pistol-shrimp whose claws move so fast they heat the water around them.
I keep forgetting how much trauma your characters get on the regular. The times of relative niceness are a good juxtoposition. Very good to lull me into a sense of contentment before starting a rollercoaster dive. Keep up the good work!
