I have returned from the realm of the dead with a new artwork as offering! :P
Nothing related to my setting this time, just a couple fantasy gladiators with extremely anachronistic weaponry wacking each other in the face. I quite like how that panther dude turned out, I will probably make more art of him down the line.
Not much else to say, in the past few weeks I've been super busy with work and other stuff, so I didn't have much time to draw. I also find my motivation for art to be quite lacking these days, which is frustrating since I have literally dozens of ideas for drawings I want to make! -.-

Panther dude should show up again, since it looks like he's gonna win this fight (Lion has no guard, and is reeling from a bonk with his weapon completely out of position, while the panther has a clear shot at the lion's gut)
Interestingly, enough gladiator fights to the death were surprisingly rare, because since gladiators were a expensive investment to train and keep in shape, not to mention that they often times could become actual celebrities if they proved to be very successful in a Colosseum. To my recollection from history museums, it is confirmed that some gladiators who did really well managed to win enough money, and fame to be able to buy their own freedom as many times they were slaves. Apparently one surviving account or advertisement about gladiators was that one in particular was so famous that it was said of him that he was a man that “the women sigh for” while occasionally fights to the death, happened more often than not it was much like a sort of scene that would have been more of a contest to subdue or incapacitate the opponent like a particularly intense boxing match. Apparently the deadlier contests that happened in arenas were either against wild animals or, in a event that is not quite as well known to modern audiences occasionally, simulated sea battles would happen in Colosseum’s, and these were far deadlier than regular Gladiatori matches due to the threat of drowning and getting crushed between wooden ships. This event required quite a lot of ingenuity in order to fill up the bottom, part of a stadium with water and drain it back again once the event was finished. With that in mind, perhaps we might see these two gladiators, either in a future match against each other, or perhaps, even in such a staged sea battle?
Your motivation for making things comment is relatable.
The detail showing the tooth flying out is with blood is pretty brutal.

Motivation is hard to come by at times! ^^
Hehe glad you liked it! ^^ Thanks!

The blood flows and the mind grows weary for the circuses of others.
But yes, I love the panther too!
And I get that lack of drive; my own depression and ADHD get in the way. Hope you can find that drive again.

HIS FANG!!
DAMN that shield hit is incredibly accomplished. I can even hear it on his maw clenching at force.
Also ...those ayes are fire. Awsome.
The image has movement on itself.
I love how it looks like that famus Mohamed Ali picture, in the sense that it is an epic frame to be frezed by some (in this case) invisible camera.
EPIC! ...FANTASTIC pic Olaff!!
Is he yelling or hissing?

Im not sure if I should mention this on the comment section but in regards to your time / lack of motivation, is that a result of the work load you currently have or adding to the lack of time due to work load, you find yourself lacking motivation for other reasons? ...because, I feel how frustrating is not to have nor the time, nor the peace of mind to work on ideas one might have, but still be full of them.
Whatever it might be, I sencerely wish you the best of energies to navegate these obstacles.

Workload is a bit exhausting at times, and then when I have time to draw I procrastinate instead. I'm currently playing a very addictive game too, so that's not helping :P
Thank you so much! ^^
Thank you so much! ^^
His fang is gone! :P He can get a golden fang now, maybe.
And I think I know what picture you are referring to!
Maybe both? A hissy yell! XD

owch! someone forgot that you can use a shield in one more way, really... to attack, that is. especially a buckler. be glad that thing doesn't have a pointed bulge, you'd lose more than one or three teeth, m'friend.
looks like a fight for life or death here. and I have to admit, lion guy seems to lose big here.

Yep, poor lion forgot that and now can say goodbye to his fang :P
So it seem! Though maybe the panther can show mercy once the lion is knocked out!

also depends on audience's mood, and how the local caesar will rule, then... let's hope the people are satisfied. entertained, even. are they not entertained?
I am very entertained. I do hope to see the panther again in future.
Nice work 0laf, love the piece
Keep your chin up boss, hope things get less hectic soon.

welcome back!
Also these gladiators look amazing... i know i would be spectating them if i where there.

Fun fact, gladiators actually very rarely died in the arena, and in fact if a gladiator was killed, the dead gladiator's owner could sue the owner of the winner depending on how the killing took place.
Oh yes, I'm well aware! But ya know, fantasy and rule of cool are fun every once in a while! :P
An epic fight indeed. You can almost hear the metal "BONK" with that shield, well done.
Anachronisms definitely work in gladiator fights because it's the perfect way to determine what would happen if fighters from different places and time periods fought each other. The ultimate Deadliest Warrior, if you will.
Then again, ancient Rome did the same thing. They liked to recreate ancient battles in the arena, though maybe not with a perfect eye for historical accuracy.

Indeed, also gladiatorial fights were meant for show, so weird weaponry can be excused.
I always love the detail you put into worn adornments and items! This is rad!
and maybe a little brutal.

Yeesss, this cat gets it!
A buckler is just as much of a weapon as the blade is~

I have a Gladiator character. I call next match for whoever wins this bout.
I checked your gallery, nice character! :D The cheetah looks wonderful!
I love how this came out; The colors and the lighting are SO good! I really love how the markings of the leopard guy look like! We NEED to see more of him! :D
Interesting! As lion, you'd think he'd be bigger, bulkier, and stronger, but seems even fragiler than the snep. Considering the blondness of the lion, was probably not fed well enough, though he still worked out to develop some muscles, just not true to his potential.
Kudos to the snep for the win! Better luck next life, lion. -_-

Who knows, maybe he was just a small guy and the leopard was larger than average! I'd guess with anthro animals the size differences would not be as dramatic as in real animals.
That got an awesome mood and sense of force, I do enjoy panther dude a lot as well hope you get to do more with him ^^
I'm glad you liked it! :D Thank you so much once again!
Hehe as soon as I have some time I'd love to draw him again!

Oh wow!! This is such a good piece! Your lion is amazing!!
Thank you so much! :D
Glad you liked him, even though he's not in the best of shapes right now XD

A beautiful yet brutal picture, I feel sorry for the lion that got shield bashed and I can only hope whoever was overlooking that fight declared mercy for him to live while the Panther accepts his victory. Also I can definitely relate when being super busy with work and trying to find time for personal art while finishing up comms on my queue atm.
Haha hopefully once he's knocked out they will indeed show mercy. He'll get a new badass golden fang in that case. :P
Thank you so much! And yeah, it's quite frustrating when that happens!

He clearly was not valuing his! Guess he gets a shiny golden fang now!
has anyone ever noticed these two scars on the underside of the lion's upper arms? looks like he hasn't done this mistake of attacking from above before...
Hah! True, maybe that is exactly what happened! When will he learn? :P
Well, weaponry and clothes are for sure anachronistic, though they don't stray that much from some gladiators. Also that arm piece the leopard is wearing is quite gladiator-ish to me. Nice shield blow, too bad in most action films of era with shields they forget that shield is just a thing to attract arrows on it and to ditch when doing 1v1.
Since gladiatorial fights were for show, some odd weaponry can be excused ^^ This is pure "rule of cool fantasy".
True, some shields even had spikes for a reason.

Well, I always welcome the rule of cool fantasy and cool scifi. After all if a plane is cool it must fly well.
Yeah, shields were quite a potent offensive weapon ..

The Gladiator Arena one of the early places historical anachronisms took place...
awesome job for that yellow lighting!!
hope you find enough time latter to get back to your awesome art!

UGH. The good ol' "I got the ideas but not the drive" situation. I feel ya, dude. Take your time, do what you gotta do, be it "life outside" or just "doing other stuff for a while," and put out your next thing whenever you do. I'll be keeping an eye out!
:)
:)
Will you at one point do something similar to the conquistadors or the explorers during the age of discovery as well? Really would be interested in that concept in your art. By the way please continue, we really missed.
Maybe one day! A lot of my art features weaponry from that time period, so we can say I've already done that in a way.
I love the sword the leopard is using. Which is it based on?
That shape was very common in all of southern Europe in the Iron Age, before the Romans took over. The Kopis and the Falcata are two examples.
This offering pleases the fan hordes. You may carry on with your life AFK for another few months B3
