The door opened after few more rattles and the monkey-man finally was able to enter his house. The young guy went down the stairs and straight down the hall to the side to reach his room, rented for a while as to live near college campus. This room was farthest and darkest of the four, and somewhat unfortunately, the only one that managed to get an owner.
Norm threw his bag and slumped on the chair in exhaustion, as he was trying to figure out what to do next. After the whole scuffle that happened two weeks ago, his last few days have been a string of further bad luck and inconveniences, leaving him in a pretty dour mood. He had spent few days after the release from the hospital once he learned that the room he had rented first was being evacuated due to previous owner’s illegal stash being found, or so the rumors say. Afterwards, his hospital visit did a number on his spending money, leaving him in need to get a job, and sadly nothing from nearest vicinity had either allowed or was open to him. Furthermore, the whole thing caused him to have as little time as possible that he wish he had to spend with his friends. And earlier today, his laptop basically broke down, leaving him with nothing to do for the rest of the day.
Well this is just great.
Norm looked around his empty room, trying to figure out what to do next. He could look for more job openings on his phone online, yet he was already getting tired from same, almost never changing screen of options he had already applied for. His known acquaintances were booked for the day, and considering the low number of people living in this house alone, his fate was pretty much clear.
Norm stood from his chair, exited his room and went down the hall to the shared kitchen area. His food was premade at home, so there was nothing for him to go buy for himself. Really, the only thing to do was think to himself, and the only thing he could thing he could think off was from back then. That dark room, the smell of sweat, trash and perhaps mucus. The look of an exaggerated mouth is still burned vividly, much to his own displeasure. Norm took of his cap and scratched his shaggy head.
Soon, someone began to knock on the door.
“Hello?!”
That voice was familiar.
“Hey, Norm? Hi I thought about seeing you, are you here?”
He was hesitant.
“Norm? He-“
The monkey swung the door open to meet the same person from that time. The meek looking “girl” gave him a tiredish bright smile as if “she” saw an old friend.
“Hey, good to see you Norm!” Her voice sounded chipper, trying to pass it off as childish.
“Is there something you need?”
“Huh? Oh! No! Just wanted to see you.”
“…Ok.”
Norm was about to close the door-
“Wait!” The “girl” nearly pushed “herself” in through the door trying to reach him. “I thought we could hang out, is this a bad time?”
Norm gave a big sigh. He was worried, exhausted, not in the mood, and yet curious.
“Look, I don’t know how to say this…”
“Is it because of the last time?” Their eyes, despite their tired appearance, kept searching his face to see if he was okay. In other words, they looked “worried”.
“Here’s the thing,” Norm was figuring out as he was speaking what to say, “I know you mean well, and you are a good ‘person’, but I just have a lot of stuff to do.” The “girl” in response is strangely eyeing the outside of the house.
“Do you have a job?”
“Er-no, not yet?” Norm got caught off guard. He wasn’t sure why it was important.
“Hmm, you want to go with me and see if maybe my guardians could get you something?”
How did “she” figure that out? How does “she” figure out all of that from just one look? How did “she” even know he lived here now?
“If you want to,” the “girl” continued, “we could go to them sometime later. They are awesome folks and don’t mind me bringing friends!”
“…Is there like, a monster or something running around here?”
The “girl” was taken aback as if she was not expecting this to come out of him. Her answer was as nonchalant as the rest of them.
“No! Everything is fine. I mean, if it were, I wouldn’t have been able to convince you at all to go anywhere.”
Norm looked around the neighborhood. He looked back at the empty basement. He even remembered the time being noon.
“…What can they offer?”
