“Huh,” Norm noted outloud, “this place is pretty close to where I live.”
“Yeah, pretty convenient.” Archie said, while excitedly running ahead of the monkey. She would look behind at his companion to see the latter’s face, hoping to see how he feels about the place he lives in. Much to her delight, he was impressed.
“So those ‘guardians’ of yours, they both work for big business?” Norm asked, noting in his mind the well-made veranda, intricately ordered flower-bed, solid-red and white traditional brick walls, and the door situated under a finely shaped roof.
“Well, its more like they both own a company.” Archie went ahead and rang the door.
Norm suddenly feel a bit more unease by the prospect. He agreed to ultimately meet them, but the fact that they could offer him some “high-collar job”, as Archie put it, would rather be improbable. Then again, considering who Archie was, how wary should he be of, now “his”, guardians?
Soon the door was unlocked, and they met the owner who said, “Archie, you are back already!” The lady was of horse species, with long-black hair past her shoulders and rich brown coat.
“Yeah, brought a friend. You don’t mind?”
“Oh…sure thing!” She nodded understandingly, and she began introducing herself to Norm. “A great pleasure to meet you, my name is Damira.” Her smile beamed out of her, though unlike Archie’s, this one came across more genuine.
Sounds ethnic.
“Yeah, pleasure!” He shook her hand, which was soft and delicate. “I’m Norm.”
“Well Norm, any friend of Archie is a friend of ours. Please, make yourself at home!”
“That’d be great!”
Damira let the two in before closing the door behind. The inside is even more impressive, from high ceilings, to elaborate furniture including a painting made out of glass, to transparent doors that gave a good view to the large backyard that the two owed.
“If the two of you are hungry, I just finished with fruit salads. I do believe I got the online recipe down to a pat this time.” Damira walked straight towards her kitchen, which if Norm could describe looks straight out of those magazine covers he once saw about “Make Your Own Dream Kitchens”.
Themselves, the two went past and towards the living room, a bright room near the backyard door and large TV at the front and a comfy sofa near a coffee table. Pretty much, exactly as Norm had expected, and furthermore, made him anxious enough to bite his nails. A stupid habit.
“Like it here?” Archie asked out of curiosity, but the delivery was strange looking back. Archie “himself” shared no such excitement, and simply focused on how Norm felt.
“It’s great.” Norm was able to only mutter. Soon the salads came.
“Enjoy yourselves.” Damira handed each bowl mixed with green melon, nuts and yogurt. Norm thanked her, with the latter noting she is looking forward to seeing how they are going to enjoy this. Also, “I can assure you the Archie will listen to all your troubles, if you need to!”
As odd as that sounded, Norm didn’t question and just let her go back to the kitchen to make more of that salad. He then noticed a big blue book laying on the counter, which she snatched immediately away. Immediately he heard someone’s footstep going down the stairs.
“I think that’s ‘Taniel.” Archie said with mouth-full of fruit salad.
Soon came in the second owner of the house, a goat-man in his thirties perhaps with long, wet, unruly chestnut hair, which he was wiping his towel with. He had no shirt on, showing his healthy and chiseled look, which still pop-out despite the light-tan fur he had. He soon saw the two on the sofa.
“Oh hey Archie. You got a friend over!” The goat-man soon noticed how much Norm was staring at him, and then gave a sheepish smile full of white, perfectly arranged teeth as he excused himself to get his shirt back.
“They look good, don’t they?” Archie asked, making Norm to come back to reality at once.
“Huh?”
“Damira and Tan? They are pretty attractive, I think.”
Norm simply coughed to himself out of embarrassment, when Damira returned back with two more bowls. “Excuse my husband, he had just returned from playing with his friends.” She then proceeded to sit at her matching-the-sofa chair that stood adjacent to the two. Her poise was elegant, as was her dress, and despite being a horse which Norm thought usually was hard to look so good, she looked like she would come from that same cover magazines featuring those “Dream Kitchens”. He saw Tan return and giving her a kiss on the cheek as both dug into their bowls, which made Norm fully believe that, yes, both are a good-looking couple.
“So, what do you think of it?” Damira asked the two. Archie gave a thumb up, mouth still full. Norm felt embarrassed and finally dug in to his own plate. It was pretty good.
Damira continued, “You know, Norm, you don’t have to worry about anything around us. I am sure you feel a bit intimidated, but we are perfectly fine with you asking us about anything!”
On impulse, Norm asked, “How did you guys came to know him- I mean Archie?”
Damira’s brows furrowed as she moved her ears to check again.
“I mean, you guys are like aware of the whole thing with, you know, Archie and that other guy that’s with him?”
Damira was silent. ‘Taniel on the other hand began talking with mouth full, “You know, we are also very friendly too and don’t mind you hanging out with Archie and us! I thought taking him to a tennis match, but you can come along. I can even be your partner!”
He then gave a playful wink and smiled through the green of the melons that got stuck between teeth. Norm found the gesture adorable.
“Sweetie,” Damira pulled her husband’s hand, “I think he is not one of those ones.” She looked at Norm, who was still unaware his face was red, and began looking at him more intently, “I believe he is the one Artemis said to be immune to Archie.”
The room fell silent.
“Oh! I see.” He then turned to Norm, “So, like, you can tell how he really looks like, right?”
Norm nodded, feeling uncomfortable now that he made everyone pay attention to him.
“Well, this is quite quaint for us!” Damira smiled, “But it does mean we don’t have to worry about him being victim of something.”
“So you guys really know about this?” Norm’s felt like his thought were about to flow out like waterfall, “About Archie and what happened? And about that “Arteamees” guy? You two are friends with him?”
‘Taniel suddenly coughed, and Damira’s nose wrinkled.
“He’s an okay acquaintance.” Tan finally let out, returning back to finishing his meal, what’s little left of it.
“So…is he like some sort of a protector of the world or..?” Norm continued only for Tan to chuckle quietly, while Damira began speaking, “He is essentially one who’s in charge of fixing this world however he can. But I must say, I am surprised how a normal human is able to perceive through the veil that he put over Archie, not even Archangels, or I even think Artemis himself is able to go through it. I do wonder…” Damira’s began leaning closer and closer to Norm as she spoke those words, looking through him as one do with a subject.
“What’s it about Archie then? What is he exactly?”
Damira’s gave him quizzical look. Tan suddenly intervened, “Archie never told you who she was?”
She.
Norm checked behind him and saw the young “girl leaning on the armrest checking “her” phone, completely oblivious to their conversation. It appears at least.
“She said,” Norm continued, “that she doesn’t exist.”
Damira folded her arms and nodded in understanding. “That is exactly correct. Artemis made – her- as a way to do his job.”
“His job?”
“That thing that happened to you last week.” Tan’s voice came from the kitchen. By that point he seems to go there to get more food in the fridge. Norm decided not to think about that event.
“Yes, as my dear says, precisely that.” Damira assumed a straightened position as she began to explain, “The worlds are governed by rules. And as you may have guessed by now, there are many worlds. These rules maintain themselves, as we should be assured of, yet this isn’t the case all the time, so there are those who look after that the world follows the rules set out, such as Father Time or Mother Nature.”
Norm once again noticed his bowly once it nearly slipped his fingers. Worlds? Rules? Those who look after them? Is this what the universe is then? It’s truth?
“Before you get ahead of yourself,” Damira continued, “there are more things we are not aware about, but I can assure you, the worlds themselves tend to be fairly stable. That said, one world tends can end up, not as much, so Artemis was set out to fix it.”
“He’s the janitor.” Tan added as he walked in, carrying an energy bar with him.
Janitor, huh?
“So he’s like low in the food chain, then?” Norm asked both of them. Tan thought while chewing, before putting his arm around Damira casually.
“He can squash the Earth flat with his pinky.” He said matter-of-factly. “Then again, even if the guy’s really good, he can’t really do much stuff like he wants, so he needs our girl here as an anchor.”
“Anchor?”
“He is not from here, so he can’t follow, enforce or bend the rules.” Damira explained. “Archie on the other hand is capable of it freely, something that still eludes both of us to this day. I mean she can be thrown anywhere and the world will accept her as its own. How fascinating all of this is.” Her amazement over the subject was obvious to Norm, albeit he still somewhat trying to wrap his head around it.
Anchor? So Archie is basically got thrown here for the other guy to do his job?
“Does all of it sound too much for you?” Tan suddenly asked. Norm snapped out and shook his head.
“I mean, its pretty straightforward. There are many worlds, that Arteamiss guy cleans it, and Archie helps out basically. Honestly though, I am amazed to hear that this is what our reality is.”
“It is fascinating in the end, no?” Damira exclaimed. She seems to be in a daze herself however.
“So, is this why…well that monster…” Norm tried to keep the memory away.
“Yep, one of those things that Artemis needs to fix.” Tan took over after finishing his bar, only to stand and go to the kitchen. Presumably for another. “Unlike other worlds, this one is getting unstable, because of all shenanigans going around. So Artemis just sends in Archie and once she catches the monster in the act, just purges them and goes to another.”
“There are many monsters?” Norm felt uneasy again.
“Yep, coming from all over, other worlds, evil dimensions and what have you. Seriously, I mean-“ he started rummaging through the cupboards, “not surprising that end of the world is about to come, but to have so much thrown at here…SHIT!” Tan realized too late.
End of the world?
Damira snapped out as soon as she heard this. “A possible one! But not guaranteed!” She began explaining in composed tone, albeit still frantic, “Artemis is in charge of keeping this world afloat, and considerably of his efforts, the results are mostly positive! As such, there is no need to worry over that!”
Norm was silent still. World could end? Like just that? He then found biting his nails again. An inevitable habit.
“Look man,” Tan ran up to the monkey boy, grabbing him firmly by his shoulder, “both of us know that guy pretty well, so if anything happens, we will be the ones who’ll take responsibility and set things right. Promise!”
Norm looked at both of them. Tan and Damira, a beautiful couple gifted with successful lives and innate truth about his world. And now, he was parted with that same truth, perhaps an ugly one in the end. Each of them gave him assuring glances. How does he live with knowing that then?
“So, about what we came for…” Archie’s sudden chipper voice broke the silence.
