It’s dusky, moonless, and wintry out this evening, the night sky above completely blotted out by the thick, smothering grey clouds of the snowstorm that had rolled into town earlier in the day and had persistently stuck around since. The heaviest of the snowfall had long since abated, though the heightened chill from the freezing winds coasting through the area and showers of light, feathery flakes still remained, and would likely continue until well into the next morning. Even so, the lone lynx hardly seemed bothered at all by the bitter cold of the night as she sat perched upon a nearby complex overlooking the streets below, just admiring the view of all she could see below her. The glittering, colorfully decorative lights strewn across the tops of houses, storefronts, and among the branches of the lone pine tree set up in the town square, the warm yellow glow of lampposts along sidewalks and on street corners, and the occasional headlights from cars passing by provided some illumination through the hazy dimness, though she could still see plenty fine despite the evening fog thanks to her keen night-vision.
And though she hadn’t been particularly paying close attention to the skies right then, a glimpse of movement out the corner of her eye was enough for her to glance upwards and catch sight of a familiar avian figure with especially large wings coasting just below the clouds. So silent and casual in his flight, it would’ve been easy enough to miss him entirely if no one even thought about looking up in that time.
A broad grin crossed the half fiend’s face as she recognized exactly who it was, not many others apart from him would be out and about so late during the night, most especially when it was so nippy out. Pulling her legs up from where they’d been dangling off from the roof as she stood from her spot and straightened herself, Kira spread her wings wide as she turned her gaze skywards before taking off with a rushing gust of air and a large puff of kicked up powder left in her wake.
The half demon beat her wings hard and fast to try and quickly ascend to Thieu’s altitude, hoping to maybe ‘ambush’ and catch him off guard if she could manage to sneak up from behind. Though it seemed that was much easier said than done, as she found herself contending fiercely with the rather strong drafts buffeting and giving a bit of pushback against her as they got caught up within her feathers. Gritting her teeth in mild annoyance, she fought back against the resistance with a forceful shove as she pumped her flight muscles more strongly in return.
Gah! Damn this wind! As confident as Kira was in her flying capabilities under most circumstances, even a natural expert would still run into some troubles in the middle of a storm like this. And unfortunately she wouldn’t have been able to carry out any sly schemes she’d had in mind anyways, as the noise of her rapid wingbeats were more than enough to have drawn her owl friend’s attention. A shame… but maybe she’ll have better luck the next time around.
Thankfully, Thieu accommodated for her incoming company as he slowed his pace and dove down, making it easier for her to catch up to him. Once they were in closer proximity, she adjusted her gait slightly to fall more in line with his and angled her wings to slow herself down enough for them to fly side-by-side. Especially since Thieu’s larger, heavier wings weren’t exactly well suited for fast flight, or at least not to the same extent as hers were. It doesn’t take long for the two to be able to fall into a comfortable gliding stride between them, soaring high above the small town below together as flurries of snowflakes blow past them in a blur. If the view from the high complex roof was admirable as it were, this was much more so. From their skyward sight they could see virtually everything, from the decorative lights that twinkled like stars along the snow-covered streets and sidewalks, to the insect-sized figures of what few people were out walking at this time of night, even a lone snowman standing in the backyard of a nearby family’s house that their kids had likely put up earlier. So beautiful… hardly anything would be able to rival a bird’s eye perspective quite like this!
Kira gives a broad smile as they spend a good while just coasting leisurely above the town alongside her owl companion, letting the falling flakes breeze past them as they admired the view below together. Feeling a sudden spark of inspiration well up within her, the lynx manages to catch Thieu’s gaze and gestures with a hand, the two of them pitching upwards and stalling so they could hover close together in mid-air and talk more comfortably for a bit over the surging winds. All the while, Kira subtly flutters ever closer towards her companion, giving him a quick tap on the shoulder before she bounds away just as swiftly, grinning wildly and barking out a laugh audible to only the two of them before it was carried away on the breeze. Haha! Plan B of her secret ‘ambush’ plot was a success after all! She giggles impishly at her small personal victory, leaving Thieu momentarily in the dust before he shakes off the brief few seconds of surprise and races after her. And from there the flying pair engages each other in a little game of aerial tag, zipping and flitting about in the cloudy nighttime atmosphere with hardly a care in the world.
Laughter and excitement is shared between the two as they dart after one another in a lofty, playful dance among the snowfall, their wings erratically scattering the falling flakes around them with every rhythmic beat and flutter. They spent the better part of at least a good several minutes just enjoying their casual romp, spinning, looping, rolling, and diving through the skies in an expert display of graceful aerobatics for anyone and everyone to see if they happened to look up that night. Until eventually, panting from exertion but her eyes still radiant with joy and delight from the thrill of their play, Kira gives a nod to her owl friend and they fall back in line alongside each other to glide side-by-side again. This time, the half fiend takes the lead a bit as they drift along lazily on the winds in the direction of her house, where they’d finish off the evening with some fresh hot tea and cocoa and getting nice and cozy to warm themselves up together after playing around in the snow.
And maybe, if the mood and time felt just right, there might be more shared between them than just a bit of especially close cuddling tonight…
An absolutely beautifully done winter-themed dual commission piece that I got done from a super amazing artist alongside my good friend and local avian expert cateowl, featuring his owl 'sona Thieu and my half demon lynx lady Kira sharing a nice nighttime flight together out in the snow! This one is certainly pretty overdue by now since we got this done quite a while ago but was very delayed on being posted due to general busyness and dealing with the post-COVID malaise I had back in January, but at least it'll be posted up here now just in time before the end of winter officially comes!
That being said, though, I really just adore how amazingly this piece really came out overall! It really gives off such comfortable and calming vibes, the way Thieu and Kira fly close and look towards each other as they get a really nice bird's eye view of the town below, the beautifully done semi-realistic details of all the fur and feathers and how soft they look like they'd be to touch, the blurred look of the snowflakes falling around them to indicate movement and how fast they must be flying up there. And of course the details, texturing, and effort put into the background work is most definitely top-notch! From the look of the houses and the storefront there with all of the decorative lights on them and the faint glow coming in from the lit windows, the lampposts scattered about on the sidewalks, and the cars driving by, to the much smaller bits like the signposts, the snowman in the backyard, and the faint figures of other people walking around. This is probably one of the most intricately detailed backgrounds that I've ever gotten done for an art piece like this, and it came out absolutely fantastically! Huge kudos to the artist for doing such a superb job overall on this piece, and really nailing the nostalgic and peaceful winter atmosphere for it~ <333
This super amazing and beautiful art piece is courtesy of the equally amazing, lovely, and wonderfully talented artist Maknora! Thank you so very much again for such an awesome art piece, and for the opportunity to be able to work with you again on something like this! It was quite a great experience and journey to watch this piece come together from the first rough concept sketches to the final, fully refined results for both Thieu and myself, and hopefully there'll come a time soon that we can collaborate again together on another commission sometime in the near future! Your artworks are simply beautiful and I absolutely adore your style, and I'm really just so grateful to have been able to meet and talk with a very kind, helpful, and understanding person like you! You truly make it such a joy and a pleasure to work with you every time, and I definitely will be looking forward to the next time such an opportunity comes around again in the near future! Keep up the great work as always~ <333
And hey, if you're not doing so already, then definitely consider hopping over to Maknora's page, giving her a watch, faving the original post of this piece over on her page and any of her other works that catch your fancy, and if you're so inclined then please think about maybe ordering something from her too! She offers all kinds of semi-realistic style commissions from quick sketches to fully rendered and finely detailed pieces for very reasonable prices, perhaps almost surprisingly very reasonable and cheap for the sheer quality of the artwork that you're getting in return! If you really like the look of her style and what all she has up for offer, whether it's commissions or YCHs or whatever it is that you're particularly interested in, it's most certainly worth getting some art done from her, for sure! She's always more than happy to have new customers, and she does offer some small discounts as well for customers who have ordered at least a couple of art pieces from her as well! So if that doesn't sound like a good deal to you, then I don't know what is! And even if you're not particularly in the market for ordering art for any reason, I still highly encourage you all to give an awesome and lovely artist the support and attention she deserves by at least giving her a follow on her page and sharing her stuff around with your friends, acquaintances, and followers!
Links to Maknora's commission info and prices as well as her available YCHs will be provided below, please do consider checking them out and ordering something from her if you're interested and like the look of her artworks! And even if you can't afford to buy anything or aren't particularly the kind to order art, even just faving her works and sharing it around with your friends and others who might like it would still be really nice!

Hehe, thank you so much!! A bit of a shame that I couldn’t get this posted up for Christmas or New Year’s at least when it would’ve been more appropriate, but at least it still works pretty well as a winter-themed piece while the season is still here! And of course Maknora did an absolutely fantastic job with the piece! Really love her realistic-ish style and the level of detail she puts into her works, she’s definitely worth checking out if you really like the look of her stuff! 😊
Thank you so very much for the fave and for your lovely comment as always, Wolfy! I really greatly appreciate your continued support and kindness, and I’m glad to have helped make your day at least a little better as well! Thank you so very much again, it’s always nice to be able to hear from you and see notifications from you pop up in my feed! I hope you’re having a great day and a nice week so far, and I wish you a wonderful weekend as well, my good friend~ 💜💜

Kira looks very beautiful flying with Thieu! Maknora did such a fantastic job drawing this for you and Cateowl :D
You did such an awesome job with the story, Phoenix! Your stories always so admirable, I appreciate the hard work you've put into these stories and descriptions, buddy! ;3 <3

Thank ya thank ya!! I’m very glad to hear that you think so! Looking at it now, both Kira and Thieu have very primarily neutral color palettes, and his white paired with her dark grays and blacks makes for a pretty nice yin-yang sort of match! That aside, though, being able to fly above a town like this with all the Christmas lights put out on all the houses and such would be a pretty awesome sight, for sure! Just make sure you’re nice and bundled up first, especially if you’re not gonna be in a plane, hehe~
Maknora absolutely did an excellent job with this, for sure! She definitely went above and beyond to include all kinds of fine and small details to really make the town feel very realistic, it’s actually pretty crazy to be able to something of this kind of quality and detail for a very reasonable price! Most other artists likely would’ve charged at least $150-$200 for something like this, so it’s practically a steal to be able to get an art piece like this from Mak! She certainly deserves a lot more attention and support for the kind of work she does! 😊
Ahhhhh my goodness, you’re just so incredibly sweet every time… and it just melts my heart to read all of your kind comments and thoughtful feedback! As always, I really can’t express in words alone how utterly grateful and appreciative I am for you and your support, and I always look forward to reading what all you have to say when I see a comment notification from you! I’m glad to be able to keep sharing these little stories with you and others who enjoy reading them as well, just knowing that they’re acknowledged and appreciated really helps to give me more inspiration to keep going! Thank you so very much again as always, Case! It’s always a joy to be able to hear from you, and the positivity you bring never fails to brighten up the day! Keep on spreading the love and sharing smiles with others too, you truly are awesome, my good friend~ 💜💜💜

Oh don't worry, I'll make sure to be bundled up hehe~
You're welcome Phoenix! Heh, I certainly try my best to be sweet, and it just brings me joy to see what you have to say in the description, and your posts are so awe-inspiring every time! Your posts and stories are something that I look forward to as always! A fantastic work, both the story and the illustration!
At first I thought the two were standing on the rooftop, having only seen the upper three quarters of the picture, but after I'd been clued in by the written part, I spent some time imagining what phase of flight each of them were depicted in. I love the contrast between the two: Thieu's gorgeously neat plumage spread to its full span, performing the owl's characteristic silent glide, while your Kira's frazzled, ruffled wings convey the frantic and playful mode of her own wingwork as she flutters on to keep up with her friend.
The characters are beautifully rendered here, but it is the vista down below that is the real breath taker: it was such a delight to go through all the described features of the townscape and match each with its depicted counterpart. This level of meticulous detailing of the buildings, the seasonal decorations, the people and the overall layout are precious and profoundly enjoyable to study.
In any weather, a town like that would be a wonderful place to settle in, but in the frosted, blizzardy haze of a grey winter, and with the celebratory lights defiantly casting color into the frozen monochrome, the scene is poignantly nostalgic and cozy.
The descriptions of Kira's anticipation on her perch, the chase and the synchronized flyover had been given a lot of thought -- far more that people usually reserve for something as difficult to test and verify as the experience of personally-powered flight. The little challenges, thoughts and actions relating to soaring through the sky, both for Kira, and her observations of Thieu's differently patterned flying, appeared very authentic to me, as I'm sure they would for any reader. It is the artist's pinnacle achievement: to convincingly transport the audience into an exciting space they couldn't easily reach otherwise.
As always, thank you for promoting the artist so generously, and for being so warmly welcoming to your watchers!
It was great to see your personal character rendered in such fine detail, too.

Thank you so very much as always, Dreamwood!! I’m very happy to hear that you enjoyed the artwork and the story as well, it really means a lot to be able to hear such positive feedback and I always greatly appreciate it!
And speaking of feedback, your lovely comments and beautifully insightful analyses are such a joy to read! It’s super refreshing to read and hear about how the finer details seen within the art itself can be seen and interpreted through the fresh eyes and perspective of someone else, and the contrast in the appearance of their wings with how much neater Thieu’s feathers are compared to the more frazzled look of Kira’s is a very interesting and neat detail to note! Especially given the differences in their wing sizes and how their means of flight differ, Thieu’s much larger, heavier wings are much better suited for gliding, while Kira’s are smaller and meant for for maintaining height and fly speed through regular flapping and fluttering. Very good eye, and also quite fitting for each of them based on their personalities and species!
And of course the background is definitely very much worth admiring! Maknora really went all out with including so many small and fine details to really make it feel like a homey little town during the winter, when there’d be colorful lights and all kinds of decorations aplenty strewn across rooftops and placed out on lawns well before and even after the holidays. Of course it might’ve been enough to have just the decorated buildings and snowbound roads and sidewalks there, and maybe a few lampposts as well for a beautiful view, but she really went above and beyond to make the scene really feel alive! I could almost hear the sound of the cars as they drive down the snowy roads, and imagine the people down there walking around with their coats and scarves held close against themselves to keep out the bitter chill of the night. Maknora certainly deserves major kudos for the effort and dedication to putting in so much detail into the artwork, for sure!
I absolutely agree with the sentiment that this place would be a very pleasant place to live, even if it’s purely fictional. As someone who has spent much of my life growing up and living in these kinds of small and fairly tight-knit town communities, a sight like this during the winter and around the holidays is certainly very nostalgic for me!
Ah I really appreciate the kind words so much! Admittedly I did do a bit of research here and there on the workings of wind resistance and how birds control their flight speed and such, so that I could try to convey the idea of that feeling of flying through the sky and especially during a storm so that it felt a bit more accurate and believable. Or at least in a way that felt like it made adequate enough sense, when taking into account the idea of how flight might work for winged creatures that are far larger and heavier than birds. So I’m very glad to hear that I was able to capture it fairly well overall, and the visual of the artwork itself definitely provides a glimpse into how it may be if we could freely fly about as we pleased and be able to get such a view from so high up! As always, this is such wonderful and inspirational praise to hear, and I absolutely appreciate you taking the time to leave comments like this as well! Your richly detailed wording and the way you lay out your own thoughts and interpretations is always so lovely to be able to read, and I certainly can’t express in words alone how grateful I am for your support! Even just knowing that the works and stories that I post up are at least seen and acknowledged in some capacity, despite not necessarily being to everyone’s particular tastes, still really means a lot!
And of course!! As always, it’s really the least I can do to show my support, appreciation, and gratitude not only for the artists who put in a lot of time and effort to create such amazing artworks, but also for those who follow me and lend their attention and support for the stuff I post up! And if it helps to give some incentive for people to also follow along with the artists themselves if they enjoy their artworks and style, then it’s really the least I could ask for! And thank you so very much again, it’s always wonderful to be able to hear from you and I look forward to being able to read what all you have to say whenever you do leave a comment! Not that I’d expect you to every time, of course, but it’s very much welcome when you can~ 💜💜
And I absolutely agree! If this kind of semi-realistic style and detailed rendering work appeals to you, then Maknora could be an artist to possibly keep a close eye on in the future! Her works are simply beautiful and amazing, and I personally really admire her painterly kind of style and the fine bits of texture and intricate elements she includes. Really, it seems almost criminal how underrated she is for the quality of the art she does, and she certainly deserves all the love and support she can get!

Thank you for this amazing reply! You are entirely too kind to your followers!
Like, 500% more kind than could be expected, and even if you had adjusted the kindness of your responses to scale back the excesses, you would still be very kind indeed!
If all of the world's goodwill, empathy and appreciation were a system of tubes, the phenomenon of your presence here on the FA would have routinely attracted kindness plumbers to check if there's a universal leak near your location.
But I assure you, there's nothing unusual about you getting long analytical or ruminative comments, because your writing is genuinely excellent -- and that's coming from someone who is both picky about the quality of what I read, and who has trouble concentrating and wrangling my eyes to look straight, so few written works can grip me.
Your taste in finding illustrators to make your writing even more tangible and captivating has likewise been impeccable, and you were very much justified in advertising those wonderful artists!
And this picture, and the accompanying story, is just very personally moving for me, depicting the wonders of personal flight (birds are absolutely amazing and magical) and the measured serenity of a Yuletide small town (which is where a lot of my friends live, and where I dream of settling one day).
Thank you for your work, and for trying hard to brighten everyone's day when you meet them!

The draft I read was great already, but you've refined it even more. Always love your writing, and maknlra did an amazing job as always too ^v^

Ooooo you sneaky owl, you! You’re definitely too good at that, you know x3
Thank you so very much as always, Thieu!! And heh, of course, whenever I write up a draft I have to go back in and edit it at least three or four times, haha~ But I’m very glad to hear it! I had fun with writing it up, and as always Mak did an excellent job with the artwork! This was a really great experience overall, and if you ever want to get another split commission done from her in the future or from anyone else, feel free to let me know! I’ll always be more than happy to get some art done together anytime, my fine feathered friend~ 💜💜

That is quite the sight to see. Lovely, owl sona is really glorious. Kira has a flying friend.
There's definitely something to be said about viewing the world from a bird's eye perspective, for sure! Seeing all the lights of the buildings below is so mesmerizing, like many, many twinkling stars among the snow. Maknora really did a great job capturing that cozy, homely, familiar feel of a small town during the winter holiday, the effort that went into really bringing the background and all the details and textures to life is definitely impressive!
Funny enough, Thieu and Kira really seem like yin and yang to each other when side-by-side like this, white and black and such. It's strangely quite fitting in a way. Flying friends are also very nice, having some sky buddies to enjoy the vastness and freedom of the wild blue yonder with is never a bad thing as far as Kira's concerned. Maybe she could use some more of those, actually.
